Frances Chen is a Director of Engineering within Qualcomm Research’s software department where she is responsible for bringing the system design to life through fast prototyping and demonstration for advanced wireless 4G and 5G projects. She has led her team in making significant contributions to the development of highly advanced system features for Qualcomm Research such as LTE in unlicensed spectrum, LTE-WLAN aggregation, interference cancelation, heterogeneous network, and voice- over-wireless data network.
One of her latest projects involves designing a common simulated modem for 5G research. Frances is also focused on developing the upper layer protocol stack for 5G in the shared spectrum. Previously, she has been deeply involved in managing the MAC layer procedures, creating scheduling algorithms, and facilitating rate control and power control on both UE and g(e)NB. Frances’s work at Qualcomm Research has resulted in seven granted patents, most recently, “WLAN Uplink Scheduler for LTE-WLAN Aggregation.”
