The quality of backhaul may vary widely among small cells. In general, picocells and enterprise small cells will use carrier-grade and commercial-grade backhaul that are properly dimensioned. On the other hand, the existing backhaul that is leveraged by neighborhood small cells (and often shared by other home electronics) may have larger variation in bandwidth and may not always meet the airlink data demand.
With UltraSON™ technology, when a small cell detects shortage in backhaul capacity, it will offload user(s) to other cells in vicinity and reduce its coverage area by decreasing its transmit power if possible. Shortage detection will be performed, even if the small cell does not directly observe the backhaul (e.g. connected to a downstream home router, instead of the cable/DSL modem). Home devices will also be protected against excessive bandwidth utilization by small cell UEs.
