LTE Small Cell SON Test Cases: Functionality and Interworking

SON features are essential for deployment of small cells. They are designed with the goal of enabling self-configuration of small cells, improving mobility performance and managing resource among neighboring small cells. However, SON capabilities and implementations vary across vendors. There has been progress in various industry forums on defining requirements and best practices for SON functions, including inter-vendor interworking aspects. 

To further this cause and establish consistent operation, Qualcomm is offering test cases to verify good implementations and interworking of selected SON functions. These tests allow operators to validate SON implementation from multiple vendors and enable interworking between them.
Following SON features are covered in the current version of the test document:

  • Automatic Physical Cell Identifier (PCI) Selection
  • Automatic Neighbor Relation (ANR)
  • Inter-cell Interference Coordination/Mitigation
  • Mobility Robustness Optimization (MRO)
  • Frequent Handover Mitigation (FHM)

Test document contains test cases that verify behavior of a SON implementation in various configurations involving multiple small cells and UEs. Certain test cases examine the collaboration among small cells through the use of X2 interface for information exchange. Interaction with Operations, Administration and Management (OAM) is also addressed in certain test cases.

These test cases can be used by operators and industry forums to form a test framework which ensures robust SON operation and inter-vendor working.
