Qualcomm Research is driving innovation by enabling mobile robotics through a state-of-the-art computing platform, built around the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processor to provide an integrated, low power solution for multiple robotics applications. Our research has led us to the forefront of mobile technology advancements that enable the creation of integrated low power systems needed to make robots “smarter.” The core technologies we are focused on that are enabling smarter robots include computer vision, sensors, machine learning, navigation and wireless communication.
The Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ Drone Development Platform
Qualcomm Research is bringing together essential technologies to help power aerial robotics. The latest advancement is the new Drone Development Platform. At the core of the DDP is Snapdragon Flight, the first drone-specific development board based on a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 series processor. The platform is targeted specifically for the robotics development community, enabling manufacturers to build the next generation of consumer robots and drones. It features advanced processing power, real-time flight control on Hexagon DSP, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and automotive-grade GPS, all packed into a board (58x40mm) half the size of a credit card. Based on the Snapdragon 801 processor, the drone development platform enables rapid software development, and its size, weight and supported interfaces make it well suited for highly integrated, consumer-friendly UAV applications.

We are building the core technologies to enable both rolling and flying autonomous robots. The Snapdragon Cargo, is an example of a flying robot that can also roll! The Cargo features our integrated flight controller powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processor. This integrated Snapdragon robotics platform provides communications, positioning, motor control and multi-core processing to enable real-time computer vision processing. We have recently demonstrated the Cargo performing vision-based obstacle detection in 3D space, highlighting the power of using Snapdragon technology in robotics.
The Snapdragon Rover showcases this integration and highlights the power of using a Snapdragon processor for robotics. Through the use of three concurrent, CPU-intensive, computer vision tasks we are enabling the rover to "see" and "sense" its surroundings allowing it to localize its environment. The rover, is also embedded with a Qualcomm Zeroth™ deep neural network which allows it to classify segmented images from its depth sensing camera. Zeroth, our brain inspired information processing research effort, and a key element of our robotics initiative, allows the rover to detect and recognize patterns and data, providing robots with the ability to understand what a particular object is. Robots powered by Snapdragon leverage these technologies working in conjunction to make robots smarter and more efficient.
In addition, we’re enabling innovation in the robot enthusiast community through a family of Robot Reference Designs that can be used as a starting point to build a robot. This includes flying and rolling robot designs (Mechanical Engineering, Hardware, Printed Circuit Boards and Radio Frequency).
