The user experience can be disrupted by interference on their mobile device if the user is close to a cell edge. Rel-11 FeICIC/IC introduced LTE User Equipment receivers that cancel interference of legacy overhead channels, such as CRS from interfering cells. Next generation advanced UE receivers will also be able to cancel interference of data and control channels from neighboring cells to further improve LTE performance.
The advanced UE receivers will also improve HetNets capacity and user experience while also enabling more flexibility in co-channel Macro and small cell deployments. Though in Rel-11 FeICIC/IC Macro will not transmit any traffic or control data in Almost-Blank Subframes (ABS), data IC receivers will allow Macro to transmit data and control in ABS while small cells serve UEs in range expansion areas. By harvesting ABS subframes in Macro, system capacity is further increased. HetNets UL capacity will be further improved by using data IC receivers which will enable the decoupling of FeICIC TDM partitioning pattern for UL and DL.
In addition, the data IC UE receiver can also mitigate the increased inter-cell interference from neighboring small cells in a dense small cell scenario of either a dedicated carrier or a co-channel deployment. It can even cancel intra-cell interference from Single-User/Multi-User MIMO operation.
Currently, the advanced UE receiver is being studied in 3GPP Rel-12, including the necessary network assistance and coordination for UE interference cancellation. Qualcomm Research has been conducting very interesting research in this area including developing a prototype to demonstrate the potential capability of the data/control IC receiver.
