It’s more than an employee program. It’s what we do.
With invention in our DNA, we don't just talk about sharing, fostering and developing breakthrough ideas. We provide and continuously nurture a trusted environment that provides the single best setting for bringing ideas to life. Founded on the infectious spirit of invention, the ImpaQt™ program empowers our employees to think, create, invent, collaborate and inspire.
“Innovation happens when a group of people — who share a common vision, have the resources to do it, have the spark of creativity — come together to create something new that can change the world.”
— Paul Jacobs, Executive Chairman
We set out to empower our team with core values that represent the best possible way to foster collective inspiration and growth.
Invention is trying new things and not being afraid to fail. We are bold in both our ideas and in how we never stop finding new ways to empower our people.
We foster and champion a collaborative environment that pushes ideas and inspires our entire community of thinkers.
ImpaQt is an honest collaborative effort that has one unified agenda: making each other’s ideas the strongest they can be.
We want our people to take pride in knowing they are part of a program that allows them to pursue that passion in the most positive environment possible.
How It Works
Invention is the core of who we are, but even creativity needs a blueprint. The ImpaQt journey consists of three basic phases—Ideation, Review, and Prototyping—spanning about nine months.
The ImpaQt team works with internal and external experts to understand new market opportunities and how Qualcomm can create new technologies or leverage existing technologies that enable these opportunities. A set of themes which are strategic areas of interest for Qualcomm are derived from this research.
The themes are revealed to the employee population. Employees visit the ImpaQt website to get theme-related content and research, to sign up for office hours, and to apply to become an expert.
Submit Ideas, Collaborate & Connect
Employees submit their ideas on the website and connect with peers and experts for valuable feedback, insights and discussions that trigger additional thoughts to enhance ideas.
Technology & Business Review
The ImpaQt team evaluates the ideas based on extensive research and feedback from external and internal experts/business units to decide which ideas move forward into the Silent Auction phase.
Based on the ImpaQt Technology and Business Review, idea submitters are selected to feature their ideas at the Silent Auction for a chance to be sponsored by a business unit lead and engage in prototyping their idea.
The ImpaQt team works with idea submitters and the corporate engineering group to determine resources for the Prototyping phase.
During the Prototyping phase, the idea submitters get 20% or more time to work on their projects. ImpaQt provides technical and business guidance and micro-funding to transform ideas into tangible prototypes.
Executive Demo & Showcase
Idea submitters and their teams demonstrate their concepts and prototypes to the executive sponsors and to Qualcomm employees.
ImpaQt Exit & Integration
The ImpaQt team works with the project sponsors and the teams to integrate projects with Qualcomm business units for further development.
See it in action.
The inventive culture we’ve fostered is thriving and growing with every new idea. The people behind the ideas have their own unique journeys within the program. Follow a few inventors and hear their own firsthand accounts.
“Sometimes it is hard for a big company to execute on things that are different from the core unless people within the company show some passion.”
From idea to implementation.
An ImpaQt idea debuts in a commercial device.
Out of the ImpaQt 2014-2015 season, the passion from one of our employees delivered on the promise of dynamic surround sound from a mobile device without headphones. Qualcomm® Immersive Audio launched on the HTC One M9 flagship mobile device in early 2015 to critical acclaim. Although not the first invention out of the ImpaQt program to be commercialized, the project went from ideation to full commercialization in one year—a success the program can most definitely be proud of.
Qualcomm Immersive Audio is a product of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Innovation is not an “aha” moment!
The biggest reason that innovation is so all-consuming is that it is never fully realized. There is no end. There is only the beginning.
