Cellular V2X

Enhancing safety with cellular V2X.

Tomorrow’s autonomous vehicles require continued technology evolution to accommodate ever-expanding safety requirements and use cases. The path to 5G will deliver this evolution starting with the C-V2X part of 3GPP Release 14. C-V2X provides a higher performance radio, while reusing upper layers defined by the automotive industry.

Direct communications

V2V, V2I, and V2P on “PC5” Interface, operating in ITS bands (e.g. ITS 5.9 GHz) independent of cellular network

Network communications

V2N on “Uu” interface operates in traditional mobile broadband licensed spectrum

Enhanced Direct Communication without network assistance.

C-V2X provides enhanced communication range and reliability, supporting higher vehicle speeds and additional safety needs, e.g., in non-line of slight (NLOS) and challenging road conditions. It is designed to work in the harmonized, dedicated ITS 5.9GHz spectrum without network assistance.

USIM-less operation

C-V2X direct communications doesn’t require USIM.

Autonomous resource selection

Distributed scheduling, where the car selects resources from resource pools without network assistance.

GNSS time synchronization

C-V2X also uses GNSS for time synchronization without relying on cellular networks.

Network communications for telematics, infotainment, and informational safety.

C-V2X utilizes wireless operator networks for V2N communications over licensed spectrum to support telematics, connected infotainment, and a growing variety of advanced informational safety use cases. By leveraging existing cellular networks and mobile ecosystem support, C-V2X can offer new business models and economic benefits (e.g. by combining the capabilities of roadside units and the cellular network).

A clear evolution path to 5G NR-based C-V2X for autonomous driving, while maintaining backward compatibility.

Evolution to 5G NR-based C-V2X will augment Rel-14 with complementary and new capabilities for autonomous driving, while maintaining backward compatibility. Designed to support Direct Communications, it will incorporate 5G NR features, such as high throughput, ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) capabilities to enable advanced use cases for autonomous vehicles, such as high throughput sensor sharing, intent sharing and 3D HD map updates, without relying on network coverage.

Real-time sharing of local data (e.g. 3D HD maps).
