LTE Direct
Operator enabled proximity services
In the increasingly hyper connected world with thousands of wireless devices around you, it is an immense challenge to quickly and efficiently discover the ones that are most relevant to you. When the scale is so large traditional server-centric and unicast based approaches fall short.
LTE Direct is a new and innovative direct device-to-device technology that enables discovering thousands of devices and their services in the proximity, in a privacy sensitive and battery efficient way. This allows the discovery to be “Always ON” and autonomous, without drastically affecting the device battery life.
LTE Direct uses LTE spectrum and infrastructure, allowing mobile operators to employ it to offer a range of differentiated applications and services to users. LTE Direct is currently being standardized in 3GPP Rel.12.
LTE Direct is a “Native” LTE solution
LTE Direct is a “Native” LTE solution
LTE Direct utilizes LTE spectrum for its operation. It uses the uplink resources in a LTE FDD system and dedicated frames in a LTE TDD system. It also leverages LTE network for timing, resource allocation (to LTE Direct), as well as user authentication.
The biggest benefit of LTE Direct is its efficient discovery, the ensuing data connectivity can be either through LTE network or optionally through LTE Direct, itself.
Designed for autonomous and “Always-ON” discovery with unparalleled scalability
Designed for autonomous and “Always-ON” discovery with unparalleled scalability
At the heart of LTE Direct is its extremely battery efficient, synchronous, broadcast-based design that makes “Always ON” discovery possible. Devices can autonomously engage in discovery and prompt the user only when relevant devices/services are found.
LTE Direct’s unique design enables it to offer very high discovery capacity and low latency, far superior than other device-device technologies.
Privacy sensitive connectionless discovery
Privacy sensitive connectionless discovery
One of the main distinctions of LTE Direct compared to others is its privacy. Its discovery is connectionless and is only based on proximity, allowing the devices to discover others without revealing their own identity or exact location.
LTE Direct offers huge discovery capacity with negligible LTE capacity impact.
Differentiated app/services enabled by proximate discovery
Differentiated app/services enabled by proximate discovery
By providing applications and services with a privacy sensitive, battery efficient alternative for proximate discovery, LTE Direct enables a user experience that consumers can adopt at a much larger scale.
LTE Direct allows a differentiated hyper local offering across a large range of applications and services in social searching/matching, venue specific services, geo-fencing, proximity triggered loyalty services/authentication, push advertising and many more.
Next-Gen solution for emergency services
Next-Gen solution for emergency services
LTE Direct offers a robust and cost-effective solution for emergency services. Its use of licensed spectrum without any interference, ensures high reliability. Its scalability makes it suitable for both small emergencies to natural disasters. Its direct device-to-device communication capability allows it to operate even during catastrophic situations such as infrastructure failure.
Since LTE Direct uses commercial infrastructure and leverages large LTE device ecosystem, it can be immensely cost-effective, while still meeting and exceeding the critical needs of emergency services.
