The Vertu Signature Touch: A luxury $11,300 smartphone

Vertu Signature Touch powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors

There’s a lot in a name, and there’s a lot in the Vertu Signature Touch. A synthesis of hardware built by the biggest names in their respective businesses, the British smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 processor running a host of elite software, and comes with access to several premier services.

But first, the phone itself: Measuring in at 5.7 x 2.7 x 0.4 inches and weighing 6.77 oz, the Signature Touch is—as a piece of engineering—substantial. Individually handcrafted by a single master craftsman from forged titanium casings and calf leather, the $11,300 Signature Touch is a work of art, as far as mobile phones go.

Given that, it’s no surprise that the phone packs the specs necessary to stand level against other flagship phones. However: The Signature Touch has a few tricks up its sleeve that might appeal to those with a desire for more with their phone purchase.

The Signature Touch is not the first cellphone to feature a 13 MP rear-facing camera. It is, however, the first to tout a camera certified by Swedish experts Hasselblad – the same camera manufacturers trusted by NASA to provide Apollo 11 with equipment to document humanity’s first steps on the Moon. Also consider the fact that Hasselblad was legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s camera brand of choice.

The phone also features premier audio certification—tuned by Bang & Olufsen—and wired for Dolby Digital Plus surround sound decoding. All the better to hear ringtones recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Also incorporated into the hardware is assisted GPS (a more reliable variant of GPS that uses data to quickly establish a location fix), 64 GB of memory, and a 4.7-inch 1080p display with an eye-popping pixel density of 473ppi.

The host of onboard features, however, are only half the appeal. Vertu provides several elite services to owners of the device. Vertu Key is the company’s 24-hour concierge, accessible at no extra cost to Signature Touch owners. Think of it as Google Now or Cortana, but with an actual, living person. Just pick up your phone for restaurant recommendations, gift suggestions for upcoming birthdays, and priority bookings.

The phone also serves as a literal ticket. Vertu Life provides owners with access to invitation-only and premiere events, such as red carpets, the Cannes Film Festival, and the London Royal Opera. It’s also your ticket into fashion shows and members-only clubs all over the world.

Available now, the Vertu Signature Touch may not be solid gold, but it may be more valuable with a bounty of features, both onboard and off.
