Femtocells

The Qualcomm Research program is driving advancements in femtocells, enabling them to provide higher quality coverage and services. Years of research, prototyping and validation effort has led to the development of UltraSON™, a comprehensive suite of self-organizing network features for interference and mobility management of co-channel deployment of femtocells in residential and enterprise environments. UltraSON™ is now commercially available as part of Qualcomm FSM™ chipsets.

Another area of focus is targeted towards maximizing the value of femtocells for open-access public neighborhood outdoor areas. Qualcomm Research has recently introduced a novel concept called ‘Neighborhood Femto’ where open-access femtocells are deployed indoors but provide extended coverage outside, resulting in tremendous capacity benefits
