Private Femtocells for Indoors

As femtocells are deployed in an unplanned manner, in the same frequency channel as the macro carrier, several challenges must be addressed: 1) how to minimize downlink interference to macro users, 2) how to reduce or eliminate uplink noise that might affect neighboring femtocells and macro cells, and 3) how to provide seamless mobility for users in idle and connected modes. This is especially a concern for femtocells deployed with closed access.

Therefore, femtocells need to self configure in such a way so that they seamlessly integrate and operate satisfactorily with the existing femto-macro network and provide excellent performance, regardless of their location within a residence or an enterprise within the macro network.

Qualcomm Research has developed UltraSON™, a comprehensive suite of self-organizing network features to address these challenges. The UltraSON suite, which is extensively analyzed and field tested, is currently commercial in Qualcomm’s FSM™ chipsets.

Project Features

UltraSON Femtocells Transmit Power Calibration Suite

This suite addresses various algorithms and techniques femtocells use to provide appropriate range and manage downlink femto-macro interference.

UltraSON Uplink Interference Management Suite

The uplink interference suite addresses the algorithms and techniques to manage interference caused by femtocell users on the macrocell and vice versa.

UltraSON Mobility Management Suite

The mobility management suite addresses efficient femtocell discovery mechanisms in idle and active mode for all mobiles including legacy devices.
