CardioNet is the first company to develop and introduce a fully mobile, continuous cardiac monitoring service for diagnostics – allowing heartbeat-by-heartbeat ECG monitoring as patients go about their normal daily activities. The company is focused on helping physicians detect and therefore treat cardiac arrhythmias.
The CardioNet service is comprised of a PDA-sized monitor for continuous ECG monitoring, communication services to a CardioNet server, and abstracted and detailed reports that are analyzed on a 24/7/365 basis by certified cardiovascular technicians.
The Need for Reliable Data Delivery
For CardioNet, and the physicians and patients it serves, its solution for mobile cardiac telemetry is time sensitive – time saved in diagnosis could be life saving. Communication services must be absolutely reliable and must effectively manage the inherent limitations of wireless for coverage gaps, dropped connections during data exchange, and occasional service outages.
For CardioNet wireless network management was not a core competency. Yet the success of CardioNet’s solution meant that they had to get it right.
Components of a Tailored Solution
CardioNet turned to Qualcomm to solve the challenges of wireless communications services. As a leader in providing wireless services for nearly years, Qualcomm Enterprise Services created a tailored solution to meet CardioNet’s needs.
- The foundation of the solution includes Qualcomm’s wireless network service over a CDMA network, providing the far reaching coverage and excellent availability throughout the U.S. for patients using the CardioNet service.
- Qualcomm also integrated its advanced communication protocol and communication management technology with CardioNet’s monitoring devices, adding to the reliability of data exchange and assuring that messages would not be lost.

Communication services are managed through Qualcomm’s Network Operations Center, providing the 24/7/365 support and scalability needed by CardioNet. Additional value added services include provisioning support, 24/7/365 technical support, and customized billing processes— which added to the simplification of communications services.
Benefits
CardioNet has experienced rapid acceptance in the healthcare community and has already been attributed with saving many patients' lives. Because many heart rhythm problems occur infrequently, continuously monitoring ECG information as the patient goes about normal daily activities is the key to diagnosing cardiac arrhythmias.
"In the development of the CardioNet wireless solution, we looked to a provider with proven and reliable technology. Qualcomm's reputation as a leading provider of wireless data communication services made them stand out as the provider of choice. |
