Derek Aberle

Executive Vice President, Qualcomm Incorporated and Group President

Derek Aberle serves as executive vice president of Qualcomm Incorporated, and group president. He is also president of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL) and serves as a member of Qualcomm’s executive committee.

Aberle oversees Qualcomm’s technology and IP licensing business, core services businesses, and display businesses as well as the Company’s standards activities. He also helps to formulate and drive Qualcomm’s key business strategies across the Company, including for many of the Company’s earlier stage businesses.

Aberle has been instrumental to the success and growth of QTL. Under his leadership since late 2008, QTL has significantly grown both revenues and profits and established its 4G licensing program. He has played a leading role in structuring and negotiating key license agreements with many of our leading licensees, including Ericsson, Huawei, LGE, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, ZTE and many others. In the process, he has built strong relationships with the Company’s licensees. He has also contributed heavily to the creation and implementation of the legal and business strategies that lead to the resolution of several of the Company’s licensing-related disputes.

Prior to his current role, Aberle held several roles within QTL, including SVP & general manager. In 2000, Aberle joined Qualcomm after representing the Company as outside counsel for several years at the law firms of Pillsbury Madison and Sutro and Heller Ehrman.

Aberle holds a bachelor's degree in business economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude.
