Qualcomm Enhances Critical Event Reporting Application with Data from Bendix Wingman Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology

— New Event Trigger Helps Fleets Proactively Focus on Safety with Additional Real-time Vehicle Data

– June 05, 2012 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), a leading provider of integrated wireless systems, applications and services to transportation and logistics companies, today announced at its Vision 2012 Management Conference the integration of additional on-board sensor messages from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC (Bendix) to its Critical Event Reporting (CER) application. The integration of messages from the Bendix® Wingman® Advanced™, a collision mitigation technology, provides further benefits to fleets using CER to proactively improve safety performance, streamline driver training and help mitigate costly accidents. This newest third-party event trigger from the Bendix Wingman Advanced system is available immediately to new and existing Qualcomm Mobile Computing Platform customers.

The integration of the Bendix Wingman Advanced system is the latest expansion of Qualcomm’s product offering that includes technology designed to help enable safer driving practices. Using a radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle, the Bendix Wingman Advanced system helps enable safer fleet operation through always available warnings, active interventions and information. The system uses throttle reduction, engine retarder and brake application to decelerate the vehicle to maintain a set following distance. Wingman Advanced can help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or help reduce their severity, particularly if drivers are momentarily distracted and the lead vehicle suddenly slows.  

The innovative stationary object alert incorporated into Bendix Wingman Advanced provides audible and visual alerts to the driver when the vehicle is approaching a stationary metallic object blocking the lane of travel, such as a car, steel drum or other metallic obstruction blocking the lane of travel. The alert gives the driver up to three seconds before a potential impact, helping him or her to respond to the impending threat. The warning is always available above 10 miles per hour.

Through the integration of messages from Bendix Wingman Advanced, Qualcomm’s CER application extends beyond the vehicle cab to the back office, where driver and fleet managers can access a consolidated view of driver performance data from different third-party sensors and other related information, including hours of service. Displayed via an intuitive user interface through the CER application, the factual data is aggregated and captures real-time event information to help fleet and safety managers tailor operations while managing driver behavior.
