Qualcomm Announces Support for Mobile Scalable Vector Graphics

Richer Animation Capabilities Complement Qualcomm’s Launchpad Multimedia Technologies

– October 27, 2004 – Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and BitFlash, an industry recognized leader in Mobile Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), today announced that Qualcomm has licensed BitFlash’s Mobile SVG Tiny (Mobile SVGT) technology to support Qualcomm’s Launchpad™ suite of multimedia technologies, including the market-proven Compact Media Extensions™ (CMX™) multimedia software.

SVG enhances the wireless experience by enabling rich, interactive multimedia functionality. Now with Mobile SVGT player, operators can deliver infotainment services such as location-based applications that maximize the zoom-in capability of SVG for reading maps. Operators will also be able to offer entertainment content with SVG animations for cartoons and greeting cards, as well as greater handset personalization with user interface (UI) customization. SVG also supports Qualcomm’s BREW® solution by providing additional zoom, animation and user interface enhancements to the BREW system’s broad infotainment application portfolio. Support for this capability in Qualcomm’s chipset solutions will be available starting with the Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) MSM6250™ chipset for WCDMA (UMTS) in the fourth quarter of calendar 2004, and the MSM6150™ for CDMA2000® 1X and MSM6550™ for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in early 2005.

“Qualcomm’s MSM chipsets provide OEMs with a powerful platform for delivering rich, standards-based multimedia content, and we’re pleased that our Mobile SVGT player is a component of Qualcomm’s CMX offering,” said Marc Diguer, CEO of BitFlash. “BitFlash provides reliable Mobile SVGT support in a small footprint -- crucial for reducing handset costs and for consumers who want to personalize dynamic, robust content without large memory requirements.”

“Qualcomm’s support for SVG introduces a flexible graphics solution that enhances the feature functionality of Qualcomm’s integrated Launchpad multimedia suite,” said Luis Pineda, vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Based on BitFlash’s Mobile SVGT solution, Qualcomm’s latest CMX offering enables a richer animation experience with smaller files sizes, allowing the developer to focus on content, not memory limitations.”

BitFlash’s Mobile SVGT player allows OEMs to meet the 2D graphics multimedia standard mandated by 3GPP and allows OEMs to run high-quality SVG on a range of MSM platforms, bringing further differentiation to Qualcomm’s segmented product base. Qualcomm’s SVG offering includes support for SVG Tiny 1.1 content and support for many of the advanced features of SVG Tiny 1.2, including opacity, gradients and document object model (DOM) capabilities.

SVG Tiny includes scalability to allow image resizing for easy portability and design reuse, ensuring images can fit any size screen without quality loss. Zoom capabilities are supported, enhancing the user experience with multi-layered, deep graphics that permit users to zoom in on object details even on smaller screens. SVG Tiny also promotes efficient use of power and memory compared to traditional bitmap graphics, making the computer-quality graphics capabilities of SVG ideally suited for the small form factor of the mobile platform.

The MSM6250 chipset is part of Qualcomm’s Multimedia Platform which also includes the MSM6100™, MSM6225™, MSM6300™ and MSM6500™ chipsets -- single-chip solutions that deliver engaging multimedia devices and applications to more market segments in every major wireless standard.

The MSM6150 and the MSM6550 chipsets are part of Qualcomm’s Enhanced Multimedia Platform, with support for all major air interfaces, and also includes the MSM6275™, MSM6280™, MSM6700™ and MSM6800™ solutions -- integrated chipsets that deliver increased processing capacity and lower power consumption to drive the global demand for 3G enhanced-multimedia products and services.
Qualcomm’s CMX solution, fully integrated with the Company’s MSM chipsets, enables wireless devices to project voice, music, text, graphics and animation simultaneously with capability for 72-polyphony, 128-instrument music. The CMX solution is part of Qualcomm’s Launchpad suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, including Qualcomm’s gpsOne™ solution, the world’s most broadly deployed assisted-GPS handset technology.

Qualcomm’s chipsets also support Qualcomm’s BREW system, which enables the development and monetization of advanced applications and content, allowing operators and OEMs to differentiate their products and services and increase revenues. Qualcomm’s chipsets are also compatible with the Java® runtime environment; J2ME™ can be built entirely on the chipset as an extension to the BREW solution.
