Qualcomm Congratulates KDDI on Exceeding 10 Million Subscribers with its CDMA2000 1X Service

– September 19, 2003 – SAN DIEGO -- September 19, 2003 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today congratulated KDDI Corporation, Japan's second largest wireless service provider, for reaching a significant milestone in wireless data service by exceeding 10 million subscribers on its third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X network. Since launching their 3G network and services in April 2002, KDDI has experienced rapid subscriber growth and has established itself as a leader in 3G wireless data service offerings. KDDI was the first carrier in the world to deploy a nationwide gpsOneTM position location service, and among the first to commercially deploy a unique set of wireless applications that consumers download using Qualcomm's BREWTM system.

"KDDI has been a pioneer in wireless data services and we applaud their success and achievement of exceeding 10 million subscribers on their 3G CDMA network," said Anthony S. Thornley, president and COO of Qualcomm. "KDDI has built a reputation for being the first to bring innovative wireless services to market, and Qualcomm looks forward to KDDI's continued success in the further advancement of 3G wireless data applications and services."

In December 2001, KDDI selected Qualcomm's gpsOne solution to power its "eznavigation" position location service. When KDDI launched its CDMA2000 1X network four months later, it became the first service provider to combine position location services with 3G capabilities over a nationwide system.

Additionally, CDMA2000 1X has allowed KDDI to offer a number of feature rich handset models with color displays, mega-pixel digital still or video camera capabilities, and MP3 ringers for tones based on popular songs. Furthermore, KDDI was able to improve the performance of its popular legacy "ezmovie" color video clip download service and "ezweb" wireless Internet browser product with the high-speed capabilities of CDMA2000 1X.

KDDI further demonstrated its commitment to advanced wireless data services in March 2002 when it announced an agreement with Qualcomm to make BREW-enabled services available to its subscribers. The BREW solution allows KDDI's consumers to download a variety of wireless applications, including games, various ring tones, location-based tools and business applications, over the air and directly to their handset. As of August 2003, KDDI and the Japanese BREW developer community have created more than 50 unique BREW-based applications, all of which have been made available to consumers.
