Qualcomm and China Unicom Host Successful China BREWTM Application Development Consortium Meeting

– December 05, 2002 – BEIJING -- December 4, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the successful meeting of wireless application developers and handset manufacturer representatives at the inaugural China BREW Application Development Consortium Meeting held Nov. 17-18 in Beijing. Co-hosted by China Unicom, a major wireless service provider in China, the meeting brought together leaders from Chinese application development companies and handset manufacturers to discuss the future of wireless data services enabled by Qualcomm's BREW solution. China Unicom plans to launch a new service based on this comprehensive and easy-to-deploy wireless applications solution early next year.

"We are committed to providing support and creating opportunities for developers and device manufacturers throughout China," said Mr. Yingpei Wang, general manager of Value Added Service Department, China Unicom. "Deploying services using Qualcomm's BREW solution will allow us to meet the needs of the three key stakeholders - developers, device manufacturers and our subscribers."

"Qualcomm is honored to be working with China Unicom to foster a community of developers and handset manufacturers that will help deliver compelling wireless data services to Chinese consumers," said Peggy Johnson, president and general manager of Qualcomm Internet Services. "This meeting marks an important step in making BREW services in China a reality."

The meeting featured a variety of informational sessions aimed at providing attendees with both technical and business information about the BREW solution as well as China Unicom's guidelines for developers and device manufacturers creating BREW applications and handsets.
China Unicom is leading the way for the successful adoption of wireless data in China - a market where application developers and handset manufacturers will benefit from the revenue potential of this fast-growing industry.

In addition to the support from China Unicom, deployments of the BREW solution continue as carriers throughout the world join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in South Korea and KDDI in Japan in commercializing BREW-based services. Telesp Celular, the largest mobile phone operator in Brazil, and U.S. Cellular have conducted BREW user trials. Twenty-nine BREW-enabled handsets are already available to consumers worldwide, and 30 device manufacturers have indicated their support for the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW) platform.

Qualcomm's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK™ (software development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers - enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of QIS, a division within the Qualcomm Wireless&Internet (QWI) Group of Qualcomm Incorporated.
