Qualcomm's Dual-Mode Chipset, Supporting Both WCDMA (UMTS) and GSM/GPRS, Selected by SANYO Electric Co. Ltd.

– November 04, 2002 – Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and SANYO Electric Co. Ltd. today announced the selection of the Qualcomm MSM6200™ Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset and system software for SANYO's dual-mode third-generation (3G) handsets. SANYO's choice of Qualcomm's MSM6200 solution represents a natural extension of the existing Qualcomm-SANYO partnership. A highly integrated, single-chip multimode solution, the MSM6200 chipset supports the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode of WCDMA - also known as UMTS - as well as GSM and GPRS. The complete MSM6200 WCDMA solution includes the MSM6200 modem, and the RTR6200™, RFL6200™ and RFR6200™ direct conversion multimode chips.

"SANYO was the first company in the world to adopt our single-mode WCDMA solution, and we're pleased that they are now adopting our dual-mode MSM6200 solution," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "This will enable SANYO to leverage the multimedia applications they developed for their MSM5200-based handsets into third-generation products."

"The highly integrated feature set of Qualcomm's new 3G WCDMA solution will allow us to easily develop full-featured WCDMA handsets that will provide our customers with the advanced capabilities 3G offers," said Eiji Kotobuki, director of the board, executive officer of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., president, Multimedia Company, president, SANYO Telecommunications Co., Ltd. "The MSM6200 chipset and system software will allow us not only to port existing, highly successful applications, but also to add exciting new applications to our next-generation WCDMA handsets."

The MSM6200 chipset is the latest version of Qualcomm's WCDMA/UMTS family of solutions and supports data rates of up to 384 kbps in WCDMA/UMTS mode. The RTR6200 chip provides an integrated GSM/GPRS transceiver for GSM-900 and GSM-1800 bands, and a UMTS transmitter. The WCDMA receive function in the complete MSM6200 solution is performed by the RFL6200 chip, which is a low-noise amplifier (LNA), and by the RFR6200 chip, which contains the direct-conversion mixer and local-oscillator generator.

Like all members of the MSM6xxx family, the complete MSM6200 solution incorporates Qualcomm's radioOne™ Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture, which eliminates the need for Intermediate Frequency (IF) components, including large IF saw filters and additional IF circuitry. With radioOne technology, the MSM6200 solution requires less printed-circuit-board area than previous-generation chipsets and reduces bill-of-material costs for dual-mode handsets.

The MSM6200 solution also supports Qualcomm's Launchpad™ suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position-location, user interface and removable storage functionality, as well as the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) Application Programming Interface (API). With the BREWapi™, handset manufacturers and developers can develop both embedded and downloadable wireless applications and BREW-based products more quickly and easily.
