Qualcomm's Dual-Mode Chipset, Supporting WCDMA (UMTS) and GSM/GPRS, Selected by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

– October 09, 2002 – SAN DIEGO -- October 9, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Samsung Electronics today announced the selection of the Qualcomm MSM6200™ Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset and system software for dual-mode third-generation (3G) handsets. A highly integrated, single-chip multimode solution, the MSM6200 chipset supports the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode of WCDMA -- also known as UMTS -- as well as GSM and GPRS. The complete MSM6200 WCDMA solution includes the MSM6200 modem, and the RTR6200™, RFL6200™ and RFR6200™ direct conversion multimode chips.

"The MSM6200 solution, with its direct conversion radio technology, provides a cost-effective solution that will enable Samsung Electronics to be among the first to bring dual-mode WCDMA and GSM/GPRS handsets to market," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "The deployment of multimode solutions for WCDMA and GSM continues the longstanding relationship between Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics in developing innovative products for the worldwide wireless market."

"Qualcomm's dual-mode MSM6200 solution will allow us to provide our customers with advanced WCDMA/GSM-GPRS handsets offering competitive system performance, the richest feature sets and wireless Internet capabilities," said Mr. Ki Tae Lee, president of the Telecommunication Network Business of Samsung Electronics. "Qualcomm continues to provide CDMA expertise unparalleled in the industry, and this new dual-mode WCDMA/GSM solution will enable us to offer a 3G solution that will meet the 2G backward-compatibility needs of GSM operators."

The MSM6200 chipset is Qualcomm's second-generation (2G) of WCDMA solutions and supports data rates of up to 384 kbps in WCDMA (UMTS) mode. The RTR6200 chip provides an integrated GSM/GPRS transceiver for GSM-900 and GSM-1800 bands. The WCDMA receive function in the complete MSM6200 solution is performed by the RFL6200 chip, which is a low noise amplifier (LNA), and by the RFR6200 chip, which contains the direct conversion mixer and local oscillator (LO) generator.

Like all members of the MSM6xxx family, the complete MSM6200 solution incorporates Qualcomm's radioOne™ Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture, which eliminates the need for Intermediate Frequency (IF) components, including large IF saw filters and additional IF circuitry. With radioOne technology, the MSM6200 solution requires less printed circuit board area than previous generation chipsets and reduces bill-of-material costs for dual-mode handsets.

The MSM6200 solution also supports Qualcomm's Launchpad™ suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, as well as the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) Application Programming Interface (API). With the BREWapi™, handset manufacturers and developers can develop both embedded and downloadable wireless applications and BREW-based products more quickly and easily.
