Qualcomm Announces On-Time Sampling of MSM6100 Advanced Multimedia Solution for 3G CDMA2000 1X

– October 09, 2002 – SAN DIEGO -- October 9, 2002 - Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the on-time sample shipping of the MSM6100™ Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset and system software. A highly integrated 3G CDMA2000 1X multimedia solution, the MSM6100 chipset began sample shipments on September 30, 2002. The MSM6100 solution is the first MSM to be based on the powerful ARM926EJ-S™ microprocessor.

"The MSM6100 chipset and system software reflect Qualcomm's extensive expertise in chipset integration and offer manufacturers a powerful wireless multimedia solution that eliminates the need for a separate multimedia application processor in wireless devices," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "Handsets equipped with the MSM6100 chipset will lower system costs across manufacturers' product lines and will provide consumers with advanced multimedia capabilities, including in-phone cameras, video player/recorders and 3G graphics."

The MSM6100 chipset and system software incorporate the advanced feature set of Qualcomm's Launchpad™ suite of technologies, enabling digital camera phones with support for JPEG compression and a dedicated camera module interface. The Launchpad suite also provides streaming MPEG-4 video decoding at 15 frames per second and enables the creation of video-clip e-mail messages using the integrated MPEG-4 encoder and camera module interface. In addition, the Launchpad suite offers MP3 audio decoding, a 2D/3D graphics accelerator for advanced gaming applications, Compact Media Extension (CMX™) PC-quality MIDI synthesizer, Bluetooth™ capability to enable wireless connectivity between digital devices, MMC removable storage capability for convenient storing of data such as MP3 music or digital maps, and an enhanced LCD interface.

Also offered as part of the extensive Launchpad suite of applications is Qualcomm's gpsOne™ position-location technology and the VectorOne™ compass interface. The gpsOne solution, featuring SnapTrack® technology, offers robust data availability under the most challenging conditions, whether in concrete-and-steel high-rises, convention centers, shopping malls or urban canyons. Using a hybrid approach that utilizes signals from both the GPS satellite constellation and from CDMA cell sites, the gpsOne solution enhances location services availability, accelerates the location determination process and provides better accuracy for callers, whether during emergency situations or while using GPS-enabled commercial applications.

In addition to advanced multimedia capabilities, the MSM6100 solution features Qualcomm's radioOne™ Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture and the ARM926EJ-S core, which incorporates a low-power, high-performance 32-bit reduced instruction set computing (RISC) microprocessor. The MSM6100 chipset also incorporates two low-power, high-performance QDSP4000™ digital signal processor (DSP) cores and supports NAND flash and efficient SD-RAM for high-capacity, low-cost memory. The MSM6100 solution supports the third-generation (3G) EIA/TIA Interim Standard 2000 (IS-2000) Release A, and is backward compatible with IS-95A/B Release 0.

The MSM6100 solution also supports Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) Application Programming Interface (API). With the BREWapi™ routines, protocols and tools, handset manufacturers and developers can develop both embedded and downloadable wireless applications and BREW-based products more quickly and easily.
