Qualcomm Congratulates EPM-Bogota of Colombia on the Rollout of Third-Generation Services

– October 03, 2002 – BOGOTA, Colombia -- October 3, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates EPM-Bogota of Colombia, a company belonging to Empresas Públicas de Medellín, on its commercial launch of third-generation (3G) services through its AirNet service for the city of Bogota. EPM-Bogota recently commenced 3G services based on CDMA2000 1X at a launch ceremony held on October 2 in Bogota.

"The addition of the CDMA2000 1X network to the current PHS network will provide us with the capability to meet the demands of a growing customer base and give those clients a service with exceptionally clear voice quality and faster Internet services," said German Mejia, commercial vice president of EPM-Bogota. "With 3G services, EPM-Bogota will be able to deliver cost-effective solutions that will not only lower operating and capital costs, but will also provide a more reliable and faster service."

EPM-Bogota began operations five years ago with a PHS wireless network and began evaluating a variety of wireless technologies in 1998. After a process of careful evaluation, the company decided to migrate to CDMA. Currently EPM-Bogota has 89,000 lines that will allow for advanced CDMA wireless services. The company plans to continue expanding throughout the city of Bogota.

There are now 19 carriers who have launched 3G CDMA services in nine countries. 3G services are available through local carriers in Latin America markets such as Puerto Rico, Brazil, Chile and now Colombia. Qualcomm supports CDMA2000 1X with chipsets and system software that offer a variety of advanced features, including multimedia and position-location technologies.
