Telesp Celular Introduces First Next-Generation CDMA System In Brazil

– December 13, 2001 – SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - December 13, 2001 - Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today congratulated Telesp Celular, the largest mobile phone carrier in Brazil, on its commercial rollout of next-generation, advanced wireless services based on Qualcomm's CDMA2000 1X technology.

Telesp Celular formally announced this week the introduction of advanced mobile network services, which will be available to Telesp Celular subscribers in Sao Paulo city. The services are based on CDMA2000 1X technology, at data speeds up to 153 kbps -- nearly 10 times the speeds currently available.

"Telesp Celular's launch of CDMA2000 1X based services enables them to offer wireless Internet access at more accessible prices," said Marco Aurélio Rodrigues, president of Qualcomm Brazil. "Telesp Celular's subscribers in Sao Paulo will benefit from the advanced data capabilities, capacity and performance of CDMA. CDMA2000 1X can help carriers overcome one of the greatest challenges they face today - how to increase average revenue per user. Through CDMA2000 1X, carriers will be able to provide users a broader range of services that are faster and more efficient than currently available."

CDMA2000 1X provides nearly double the voice capacity of second-generation (2G) cdmaOne™ systems. CDMA2000 1X helps meet the continuous growth needs of voice services, while providing new wireless Internet services. CDMA2000 1X provides a more capable, spectrally efficient, timely, lower cost path to next-generation services. CDMA2000 1X was first introduced in Korea in October 2000 and to date, has approximately 2.5 million subscribers. Additional CDMA2000 1X launches are expected in 2002, including in the United States, Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Qualcomm supports CDMA2000 1X with chipsets and system software that offer a variety of advanced features including multimedia and position location technologies.
