Qualcomm Demonstrates The Latest in CDMA Wireless Internet Connectivity During Super Bowl XXXII Week in San Diego

– January 22, 1998 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that the Company's broad range of CDMA-based Wireless Internet Connectivity solutions will be demonstrated for the public at the Qualcomm Technology Pavilion, located in Downtown San Diego's historic Gaslamp District, during Qualcomm Super Fest XXXII presented by Sprint and Sprint PCS. The demonstration will take place during Super Bowl week on January 23 and 24, 1998.

"This is an exciting demonstration for San Diego consumers and visitors, as they'll see the soon to be available wireless data capabilities," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, president of Qualcomm's Subscriber Products Division. "They'll be able to interact with our Q™ phone and experience wireless Internet access, as well as the phone's unique features and benefits thatcan be tailored to best serve any lifestyle—from the general consumer to the on-the-go professional."

The interactive demonstrations will highlight fast, Internet-based quick net connect technology that establishes a digital wireless Internet connection in a matter of seconds. Qualcomm has partnered with Unwired Planet and is using its micro-web browser, UP.Browser™, to combine the power of Qualcomm's Q phone with the range of content available on the Web. This is of special interest to consumers as it marks the next generation in wireless information access; providing users with the freedom of interactive, cost-effective access to email, information services and applications from their mobile CDMA digital phone.

Visitors to the demonstrations in the Qualcomm Technology Pavilion will be able to use the Qualcomm Q phone to connect to content providers including Intelligent Information Inc., Weather Underground, One on One Sports, Quando and DBC Stocks. Applications that are directly accessed off the four line-display of the Q phone include: sports scores; San Diego traffic and weather updates; stock quotes; and movie schedules. Visitors can even view restaurant menus and make dinner reservations online.

Featured in this demonstration is the Q phone, a sleek, light-weight, palm-sized, folding phone from Qualcomm. The Q phone is the first digital PCS phone that offers users a choice of call alerts, including new vibration mode for notification of a call or page. For greater flexibility in call answering, the ergonomically designed phone provides several options, including single touch call answering, caller ID display, plus an automatic call answer feature which enables a call to be answered by simply opening the phone.

The Q phone complements Qualcomm's entire family of advanced CDMA digital phones, including the QCP cellular and PCS portable phone series and the QCT series of cellular and PCS fixed wireless phones. The hallmarks of every Qualcomm CDMA digital phone include crystal clear voice quality, enhanced privacy and fewer dropped calls.

The end-to-end solutions demonstrated at the Qualcomm Technology Tent utilize a Qualcomm Intelligent Base Station Controller (IBSC), a Qualcomm 1900 MHz Base Station Transceiver Sub-system (BTS), a standard network router, as well as cdmaOne™ interface and IS-657 CDMA packet data standards. Industry-standard Internet and communications protocols are also being used (TCP/IP). No modems are needed and simple software upgrades allow CDMA cell site equipment to support this feature. Additionally, data traffic is carried from CDMA cell sites to the switching center via the same backhaul used for voice traffic. Data rates of 9,600 to 14,400 kbps are currently offered.
