Qualcomm's Eudora® Software Extends Lead as World's #1 Internet Email Solution; New Study Shows 80% Growth Over Last Ten Months To More Than 18 Million Users

– December 16, 1996 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), a leader in wireless communications and advanced electronic messaging solutions for the Internet, today announced new international research indicating more than 18 million people now use Eudora Pro™ and Eudora Light™ software as their primary Internet email solution. The new findings confirm that the Eudora family of products is the world's most widely used Internet email software.

The study found that more than 96 percent of Eudora® software users are satisfied with the brand overall—a higher rating than other Internet email products. Eudora products also received better user satisfaction scores than other Internet email brands in every individual area tested, with significantly higher ratings in key areas:

  • Ease-of-use: 97 percent of Eudora software users are satisfied
  • Reliability: 96 percent of Eudora software users are satisfied
  • Cost: 95 percent of Eudora software users are satisfied
  • Compatibility: 95 percent of Eudora software users are satisfied

The Research Spectrum conducted the international study as an email survey on usage patterns and preferences of over 2,000 home and business users of Internet email. Seventy-six percent of respondents had been using Internet email for over six months, indicating a user sampling that was familiar with the Internet email experience. Based on parameters defined in earlier studies by Find/SVP, IDC and other leading research firms, the new survey indicates an 80 percent increase over the 10 million users of Eudora email software products previously estimated in January 1996 research by Matrix Information Directory Services.

"Our technology leadership, elegant product design and focused marketing strategy have been key in the significant growth of our installed base and high levels of customer satisfaction. "Based on the early success of Eudora Pro 3.0 software, the enhanced features in new Eudora Light 3.0.1 freeware and our high level of user satisfaction, we expect to continue to extend the Eudora brand's dominance and eclipse the competition in the Internet email market."

The survey confirmed the apparent relationship between building strong user interest and long term customer loyalty with the distribution of unrestricted-use, completely functional Internet freeware, a marketing strategy pioneered by the Eudora division. The research found that nearly 50 percent of the Eudora Pro software users surveyed had used Eudora Light software before upgrading to the commercial version. Findings also indicated that over half of all Eudora software users obtained their first Internet email software from Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

"We've already proven that a long term commitment to free software, such as Eudora Light, can significantly contribute to the success of building sales of commercial products, such as Eudora Pro," Brenner said. "We are now taking that strategy to the next level by offering the most feature-rich free Internet email on the market."
