Qualcomm and TriQuint Semiconductor To Jointly Develop Integrated Circuits for CDMA PCS

– November 20, 1996 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that it has signed an agreement with TriQuint Semiconductor (NASDAQ: TQNT) to jointly develop radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits for Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) handsets. The joint agreement addresses the radio frequency receive functions required in Qualcomm's CDMA Personal Communications Services (PCS) phones. One focus of the development is on an RF receive component which provides critical radio performance required to achieve compliance with the North American IS-95 CDMA standard.

"This agreement will marry Qualcomm's design engineering and CDMA technology expertise with TriQuint's high-quality semiconductor production capability, and will provide the customer-owned tooling (COT) support that we require," said Don Schrock, vice president and general manager of the ASIC Products group for Qualcomm. "We plan to maximize TriQuint's established low cost, high volume commercial manufacturing capability to satisfy Qualcomm's projected demand for CDMA PCS components."

The components will be implemented in TriQuint's Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor technology and designed by teams at TriQuint and Qualcomm, and will be manufactured at a new plant that TriQuint is building in Hillsboro, OR. The component design will use the excellent radio frequencies properties, such as, low noise and low distortion, inherent in TriQuint's proprietary gallium arsenide technology. Specifically, low noise is required for superior system sensitivity to support wide base station spacing and best call quality. The radio's enhanced performance capability will contribute toward realization of the desired optimal CDMA handset performance in which range is maximized, robustness is ensured and high system capacity is realized.

TriQuint and Qualcomm will also be investigating a wide range of other RFICs for various CDMA wireless applications, such as wireless local loop and the Globalstar satellite system.
