Qualcomm Offers High-Speed Digital Direct Synthesizers

– May 07, 1996 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today introduced a pair of high-speed, general-purpose Direct Digital Synthesizers (DDS). The synthesizers are ideally suited for both high frequency sine wave synthesis and general-purpose arbitrary waveform synthesis.

The Q2240 DDS series can be used in a broad range of applications including personal communicators; keyless data entry; radio frequency identification (RFID); hand-held test and measurement equipment; portable communications terminals; wireless PC cards; frequency hopping radios; digital video/audio signal generation; arbitrary waveform or function generation; PC-based instrumentation cards; telemetry transmitters; digital radios; and modems.

Both versions, designated Q2240-2S2 and Q2240-3S2, feature single power supply operation at either +5 Voltage Direct Current (VDC) or +3.3 VDC, and perform at speeds up to 100 Megahertz (MHz) clock rate. The distinction between the two products is the digital control interface required. The Q2240-2S2 uses a serial control interface, while the Q2240-3S2 uses a direct parallel control for all inputs. With all frequency inputs external, the Q2240-3S2 can provide up to 100 MHz frequency hop and sweep rate ability, and the Q2240-2S2 has up to 100 MHz serial clock speed using its simple serial interface.

The devices can be used to form the basis of an arbitrary waveform generator with 14-bit digital output resolution when configured in arbitrary waveform mode, or utilize their built-in sine lookup function for sine wave synthesis. Additional built-in utility includes power-down mode and three available output signal formats: Offset Binary, 2's Complementor Sign Magnitude.

The Q2240 series provides 32-bit digital input resolution to the input frequency control which translates to greater than or equal to .023 Hertz (Hz) minimum frequency step size depending on the frequency of the applied clock reference. The Q2240's 12-bit sine wave output amplitude resolution can be connected to many of the high-speed 12-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) now available to achieve a spurious output performance greater than 70 dB. The Q2240-2S2 is packaged in a 10x10 millimeter (mm), 44-pin Thin Quad Flat Pack (TQFP) and the Q2240-3S2 comes in a 14x14 mm, 64-pin TQFP package.

Pricing for the Q2240 DDS series in 100-piece quantities is $12.95 per device. Samples will be available in late May, with production quantities available in July of 1996.
