Description:
One major challenge many operators are facing in GSM900 migration to UMTS is that their GSM 900 spectrum is often less than 5 MHz or in non 5 MHz multiples, creating unusable narrow-bandwidth fragments. Also, in many cases it may not be feasible to clear spectrum for a full UMTS carrier. S-UMTS effectively addresses these challenges by allowing UMTS/HSPA+ in smaller than 5MHz bandwidths. Additionally, this also allows operators to increase the utilization of their existing UMTS spectrum.
