More than 600 people joined Qualcomm in Silicon Valley this week to hear about “What’s Next in Mobile.” It was Qualcomm’s second annual Bay Area mini-conference. The one-day event featured Qualcomm executives and drew a high-caliber crowd—including industry analysts, media, customers, and potential partners.
“I wanted to hear the road map,” said attendee Jim Eckstrom, a sales director with digital security company Inside Secure. “I got a boatload of information.”
Most of us have it—that drawer full of cords used to charge the various electronic devices used in our daily lives: phones, tablet computers and handheld games to name a few. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to eliminate these cords? Well there is: wireless power.
I have been the Qualcomm Wireless Reach project manager for our Wireless Access for Health (WAH) program in the Philippines since 2009, so I was thrilled to participate in an event recently in Manila to celebrate the project’s success and announce expansion plans.

While most schools remain in an industrial era model, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 65 percent of grade school kids will end up in jobs that haven’t been created yet.[1] To add to that, classroom sizes are continuing to grow as a majority of states are spending less per pupil than they did before the recession.[2]
Not a long ago, when we started talking about small cells, the first question we would always hear was “why do we need small cells, when we have Wi-Fi?” But that has rapidly evolved into “how can we ensure that the interworking between 3G/4G and Wi-Fi is robust and seamless?”
The interworking becomes even more crucial considering the looming 1000x challenge, in which Qualcomm envisions dense deployments of small cells, most of which are integrated with Wi-Fi.
