Qualcomm Congratulates Picitup for CES Award

There is a lot happening this week at CES. The awards are already rolling in and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) had its 2012 Design and Engineering Awards Honorees displayed Sunday night at a CES press event. One of the honorees, in the Software & Mobile Apps category, was Picitup for its computer vision (CV) based driving safety app, iOnRoad . We know these folks pretty well and we were psyched when they downloaded the FastCV™ SDK, quickly incorporated it into iOnRoad and significantly upped the performance.

Unsolved Mysteries of the Kyobo eReader (Not Really)

A few weeks ago, we proudly announced the world’s first color e-reader to feature mirasol® display technology – the KYOBO eReader. We believe this announcement is the first step in changing consumer’s expectations about what an e-reader is; delivering color and interactive content, while maintaining the outdoor visibility and weeks of battery life to which they’ve become accustomed.

Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs) – What’s Next?

In August 2011, the Seventh Circuit court vacated the EOBR 395.16 rulemaking based on a determination that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) had not adequately addressed the potential for driver harassment with the new guidelines. FMCSA later indicated that it would redo the EOBR rulemaking and not appeal the judge’s decision. Since FMCSA’s proposed EOBR mandate rulemaking depended on the 395.16 rule for technical guidelines, it appears that the mandate will also be delayed. So what is next, and when?

Celebrating Sony Ericsson’s industry first for WebGL

In a previous post, I provided three reasons why developers should adopt WebGL and discussed the importance of enabling the next generation of use cases for “HTML5-related” 3D graphics within mobile web browsers. The complexity and richness of content on the web continues to increase, and there is a renewed focus from web site and web app developers to utilize the latest functionality--from enabling applications that work in off-line mode, to visually adding complex two and three dimensional graphical elements to enrich their sites.

Marching toward femto networks!

During my recent talk about small cells and their evolution toward higher coverage, capacity and reach, a listener asked me, “Isn’t that what today’s picocells offer?” The answer is, “Exactly!” As we move toward femto networks, femtos will be used as traditional picocells, combining the plug and play benefit of femto architecture with larger coverage and capacity of picocells. Our recent announcement of femto chipsets supporting up to 32 users is a major step in that direction.

The Wireless Health Waiting Game

Since taking the helm at Qualcomm Wireless Health just under a year ago, I have had the opportunity to speak with many medical device manufacturers, wireless operators, wireless sensor companies, hospitals and doctors, and the challenge ahead is clear. I’ve also tried out some of the latest mHealth technologies myself, giving me unique insight into why the wireless health industry has not yet exploded.

Introducing FastCV: computer vision technology, tuned for mobile

We love the smarts that come with developers adding computer vision-enabled functionality into their cutting edge applications, but we needed the processing to happen faster. That camera on your mobile phone pulls in a lot of data, so we asked ourselves how we could retain the smarts while still processing the information efficiently so that users get great experiences without bogging down the device. That’s what led Qualcomm to launch FastCV, the first mobile-optimized computer vision (CV) library for ARM-based devices. Qualcomm is making it available to the industry so that CV applications can run efficiently on a wide array of mobile devices, even mass market handsets.
