S4’s Adreno GPU: More than Just Gaming

The term Graphics Processing Unit (or GPU) is often spoken in the same breath as gaming applications. A powerful GPU is directly responsible for smooth gameplay, high frame rates, and enhanced scenes with jaw-dropping effects. While the Adreno 225, the GPU component found in the Snapdragon S4 processor, is designed to render the most complex scenes in any given game, it also lends itself to some pretty impressive technologies and use cases that can be executed with an S4-equipped device.

The Snapdragon S4’s Adreno GPU takes Graphics to the Next Level

The ability to render with a GPU on mobile devices has created a world of possibilities for game, web, and graphics developers, as offloading graphics rendering from the CPU can free up valuable system resources. The embedded GPU found in the latest Snapdragon processors is custom-built by Qualcomm and aptly named the Adreno series, because it’s analogous to applying a shot of pure adrenaline to any graphics intensive task. With the latest S4 processors, the Adreno 225 takes center-stage with a 50% increase in performance over the previous generation Adreno 220 and is roughly 7.5 times faster than the first generation Adreno 200.

Snapdragon S4 Camera Revealed

There’s been a lot of buzz about our Snapdragon S4 processor leading into Mobile World Congress 2012. It’s already well known that the S4 is the first mobile processor built using a 28nm process and the first to integrate 4G LTE, made possible because our chips are custom-designed from the ground up using the ARM instruction set. What hasn’t been fully revealed yet, however, are some of the finer details about the S4 and its many components which empower all the fun multimedia tasks that the average person can do with a mobile device.

HDR Photography on an S4 Smartphone

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is a popular technique that blends a series of photos taken at different exposures and combining them into one image that looks slightly out of this world, similar to a 3D scene taken from a video game. It’s an attempt to overcome the limited dynamic range of most camera sensors, developing a full range of tones that, at most, only real human eyeballs can detect. Ordinarily, HDR enthusiasts would use an expensive DSLR camera and process these photos on a separate system using expensive editing software. But equipped with a powerful mobile processor, multiple photos taken at different exposures and software post-processing can all be done on a single device as small as a smartphone.

Spectrum Legislation Now Is a Win-Win-Win-Win

Should spectrum legislation be included in the payroll tax cut extension? Or should it be used as an offset for an extension of unemployment insurance and the so-called “medicare doc fix?” Or maybe it should be enacted as a stand alone bill. Or how about yes to all the above?

mirasol Display Technology at CES 2012: Contextual Chaos

Each year at the beginning of January, technology enthusiasts clamor to be the first to touch, tweet, blog, gossip and play with the latest toys, devices and technology. The Consumer Electronics Show—or simply “CES” to the initiated—plays host to the world of consumer electronics. To the uninitiated, it’s pure chaos.

Qualcomm Congratulates Picitup for CES Award

There is a lot happening this week at CES. The awards are already rolling in and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) had its 2012 Design and Engineering Awards Honorees displayed Sunday night at a CES press event. One of the honorees, in the Software & Mobile Apps category, was Picitup for its computer vision (CV) based driving safety app, iOnRoad . We know these folks pretty well and we were psyched when they downloaded the FastCV™ SDK, quickly incorporated it into iOnRoad and significantly upped the performance.

Unsolved Mysteries of the Kyobo eReader (Not Really)

A few weeks ago, we proudly announced the world’s first color e-reader to feature mirasol® display technology – the KYOBO eReader. We believe this announcement is the first step in changing consumer’s expectations about what an e-reader is; delivering color and interactive content, while maintaining the outdoor visibility and weeks of battery life to which they’ve become accustomed.

Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBRs) – What’s Next?

In August 2011, the Seventh Circuit court vacated the EOBR 395.16 rulemaking based on a determination that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) had not adequately addressed the potential for driver harassment with the new guidelines. FMCSA later indicated that it would redo the EOBR rulemaking and not appeal the judge’s decision. Since FMCSA’s proposed EOBR mandate rulemaking depended on the 395.16 rule for technical guidelines, it appears that the mandate will also be delayed. So what is next, and when?

Celebrating Sony Ericsson’s industry first for WebGL

In a previous post, I provided three reasons why developers should adopt WebGL and discussed the importance of enabling the next generation of use cases for “HTML5-related” 3D graphics within mobile web browsers. The complexity and richness of content on the web continues to increase, and there is a renewed focus from web site and web app developers to utilize the latest functionality--from enabling applications that work in off-line mode, to visually adding complex two and three dimensional graphical elements to enrich their sites.
