Children in China Gain Access to Improved Health Care with 3G Connectivity

In the most populated country in the world, China, more than half a billion people live outside of urban areas and many do not have access to the same quality of health care as those who live within the cities. This is one reason why Qualcomm, through its Wireless Reach initiative, has collaborated with China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) and Xi’an Kingtone Information Technology Co., Ltd., (Xi’an Kingtone) to implement the Mobile Vision Project – a mobile health project that utilizes a customized 3G-enabled mobile application to assist doctors in the screening and treatment of children with amblyopia in underserved communities in China.

Diving Into Davos: Mobile Takeaways From the WEF Annual Meeting

What if I told you that in the not so distant future we could be living in a world where emerging nations are the central hub of innovation, introducing new technologies to the developed world? Indeed, the notion of who is and who is not an international power player is beginning to turn on its head. And nowhere was this sense of expanding business models and worldviews more palpable than at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, which I recently had the pleasure of attending along with several member of the executive team.

Mobile World Congress Highlights Vast Opportunity for Wireless to Improve Lives

One of the themes that resonated throughout Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) was the power of mobile in creating new opportunities and overcoming barriers in an array of vertical markets, from health care to women and entrepreneurship. Our Wireless Reach initiative supports pilot projects with this in mind and we continue to believe that wireless technology can improve people’s lives.

Executive Wireless Fitness Challenge

The results are in for the Executive Wireless Fitness Challenge. Earlier this year we launched the second Qualcomm Wireless Fitness Challenge (QWFC) with our executives. Over an eight-week period, the participants, including our own CEO, Dr. Paul Jacobs, competed to improve their health using wireless health devices. And I am excited to share the final results of our efforts.

Qualcomm Introduces BRITE and GridView for Snapdragon

If the major theme for mobile devices this year isn’t reducing battery drain, it should be. How often do you glance down at your phone or tablet halfway through the day, only to notice that most of its battery life is drained after letting it sit untouched the whole time? While there are many potential culprits that reduce battery life, the biggest one is the display. In fact, Android devices have a battery usage monitor that tells you exactly what’s eating up all the battery life, with the screen being responsible for most of it. Most users are left to manually dial down the brightness or let the OS control the brightness settings, but why should they even have to worry about this? Why can’t these technologies be baked right into the device? Snapdragon S4 brings two innovative solutions to this problem and makes them completely invisible to the user.

Snapdragon S4 Handles 5.1 Surround Sound Capture and Playback

Audio is arguably the most overlooked component in mobile devices, because users assume audio fidelity is limited to a pair of small speakers and boilerplate headphone jack. What you may not realize is that a device as small as a Smartphone can be directly plugged into a sophisticated home theater system and that a mobile processor can drive the latest in Dolby, DTS, and SRS high fidelity audio.. The latest Snapdragon S4 processors brings the 5.1 surround sound theatre experience to mobile devices.

S4’s Adreno GPU: More than Just Gaming

The term Graphics Processing Unit (or GPU) is often spoken in the same breath as gaming applications. A powerful GPU is directly responsible for smooth gameplay, high frame rates, and enhanced scenes with jaw-dropping effects. While the Adreno 225, the GPU component found in the Snapdragon S4 processor, is designed to render the most complex scenes in any given game, it also lends itself to some pretty impressive technologies and use cases that can be executed with an S4-equipped device.

The Snapdragon S4’s Adreno GPU takes Graphics to the Next Level

The ability to render with a GPU on mobile devices has created a world of possibilities for game, web, and graphics developers, as offloading graphics rendering from the CPU can free up valuable system resources. The embedded GPU found in the latest Snapdragon processors is custom-built by Qualcomm and aptly named the Adreno series, because it’s analogous to applying a shot of pure adrenaline to any graphics intensive task. With the latest S4 processors, the Adreno 225 takes center-stage with a 50% increase in performance over the previous generation Adreno 220 and is roughly 7.5 times faster than the first generation Adreno 200.

Snapdragon S4 Camera Revealed

There’s been a lot of buzz about our Snapdragon S4 processor leading into Mobile World Congress 2012. It’s already well known that the S4 is the first mobile processor built using a 28nm process and the first to integrate 4G LTE, made possible because our chips are custom-designed from the ground up using the ARM instruction set. What hasn’t been fully revealed yet, however, are some of the finer details about the S4 and its many components which empower all the fun multimedia tasks that the average person can do with a mobile device.

HDR Photography on an S4 Smartphone

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is a popular technique that blends a series of photos taken at different exposures and combining them into one image that looks slightly out of this world, similar to a 3D scene taken from a video game. It’s an attempt to overcome the limited dynamic range of most camera sensors, developing a full range of tones that, at most, only real human eyeballs can detect. Ordinarily, HDR enthusiasts would use an expensive DSLR camera and process these photos on a separate system using expensive editing software. But equipped with a powerful mobile processor, multiple photos taken at different exposures and software post-processing can all be done on a single device as small as a smartphone.

Spectrum Legislation Now Is a Win-Win-Win-Win

Should spectrum legislation be included in the payroll tax cut extension? Or should it be used as an offset for an extension of unemployment insurance and the so-called “medicare doc fix?” Or maybe it should be enacted as a stand alone bill. Or how about yes to all the above?
