During my recent talk about small cells and their evolution toward higher coverage, capacity and reach, a listener asked me, “Isn’t that what today’s picocells offer?” The answer is, “Exactly!” As we move toward femto networks, femtos will be used as traditional picocells, combining the plug and play benefit of femto architecture with larger coverage and capacity of picocells. Our recent announcement of femto chipsets supporting up to 32 users is a major step in that direction.
As a father of two kids, I am the happiest when they self organize their things without my intervention. Well, that might be a bit of a stretch when it comes to kids, but it’s actually a reality for unplanned, plug-and-play femtocells, thanks to Qualcomm’s UltraSON (Ultra Self Organizing Network).
It is indeed fun to watch an abstract idea crystallize into a technology and to see it come to life, overcoming the doubts of non-believers, and the objections of naysayers. I experienced this feeling recently, while on the test drive of our over-the-air (OTA), LTE Advanced HetNet test system here in San Diego.
