If the major theme for mobile devices this year isn’t reducing battery drain, it should be. How often do you glance down at your phone or tablet halfway through the day, only to notice that most of its battery life is drained after letting it sit untouched the whole time? The Snapdragon S4’s Adreno GPU takes Graphics to the Next Level

The ability to render with a GPU on mobile devices has created a world of possibilities for game, web, and graphics developers, as offloading graphics rendering from the CPU can free up valuable system resources. The embedded GPU found in the latest Snapdragon processors is custom-built by Qualcomm and aptly named the Adreno series, because it’s analogous to applying a shot of pure adrenaline to any graphics intensive task. With the latest S4 processors, the Adreno 225 takes center-stage with a 50% increase in performance over the previous generation Adreno 220 and is roughly 7.5 times faster than the first generation Adreno 200.

HDR Photography on an S4 Smartphone

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is a popular technique that blends a series of photos taken at different exposures and combining them into one image that looks slightly out of this world, similar to a 3D scene taken from a video game. It’s an attempt to overcome the limited dynamic range of most camera sensors, developing a full range of tones that, at most, only real human eyeballs can detect. Ordinarily, HDR enthusiasts would use an expensive DSLR camera and process these photos on a separate system using expensive editing software. But equipped with a powerful mobile processor, multiple photos taken at different exposures and software post-processing can all be done on a single device as small as a smartphone.

Snapdragon S4 Camera Revealed

There’s been a lot of buzz about our Snapdragon S4 processor leading into Mobile World Congress 2012. It’s already well known that the S4 is the first mobile processor built using a 28nm process and the first to integrate 4G LTE, made possible because our chips are custom-designed from the ground up using the ARM instruction set. What hasn’t been fully revealed yet, however, are some of the finer details about the S4 and its many components which empower all the fun multimedia tasks that the average person can do with a mobile device.
