Qualcomm Takes on the SmartAmerica Challenge [VIDEO]

Earlier this week, Qualcomm’s collaboration with CH2M HILL, Audi, Honda and INRIX took us to the White House, to engage in the SmartAmerica Challenge, which asks the tech industry and academia to propose technologies to advance the economy and create jobs. Before top government officials, we discussed the “Internet of Everything” and demonstrated a couple cool technologies—one focused specifically on improving city infrastructure, and the other about connected cars.

The Challenge was issued in December by an alphabet soup of government agencies organized by White House Presidential Innovation Fellows including the DOC, NIST, OSTP, FCC, DHS, DOE, DOT, HHS, FEMA and NSF. Qualcomm’s automotive and water infrastructure projects were amongst the 24 chosen to exhibit at the SmartAmerica Preview & Expo on June 10th and 11th.

What we demonstrated:

Enhanced water distribution infrastructure

Most water systems around the world have limited means of communications to bring back sensory data once water goes into distribution. As a result, there isn’t a good handle on identifying leaky pipes, quickly identifying contaminations or detecting overflows. As a result, a significant portion of water is lost and costs go up.  

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and CH2M HILL have been collaborating with water/wastewater utilities to develop sustainable connectivity solutions leveraging machine to machine (M2M) cellular technologies that will help water utilities improve water quality, receive reliable information and manage water resources. The demonstration highlighted how the application of M2M is enabling four progressive utilities to cost-effectively fill a major gap currently existing in the water industry, with regards to how utilities collect, transmit, and use system and asset data, and how that data can be more effectively converted into “actionable” information, knowledge, as well as operational, maintenance and capital improvement decision-making. Transportation – smart vehicle communication

Imagine driving in your car and being able to sense nearby smartphones on pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists, and each get alerted if a collision was predicted. Such a feature could prevent accidents at cross walks, when backing out of parking spaces or when sharing the road with others. 

This cutting-edge technology is called Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication, and we’re collaborating with Honda to make it a reality.

“V2X” goes beyond Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications to include Vehicle-to-Pedestrian interactivity to increase safety. We collaborated with Honda and demonstrated this using an Acura TL automobile equipped with Qualcomm® VIVE™ Wi-Fi® and 802.11p Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology, communicating via wireless to a Qualcomm-enabled smartphone held by a pedestrian. The same Acura is also powered by Qualcomm® Gobi™ cellular technology for the Acuralink telematics platform. 

Now imagine being able to sleep in longer because you have the ability to interact with traffic signals to ensure you get consecutive green lights and are quickly able to navigate to available parking spaces at your destination through your in-car platform.

We demonstrated Vehicle-to-Cloud driver efficiency services with an Audi A3 automobile utilizing a Qualcomm® Gobi™ 4G-LTE modem and INRIX data streams that provide real-time insight that quickly navigates drivers to available parking as a precursor to other connected car services, such as interaction with traffic signals for green light optimization. Considering that INRIX research shows drivers in America’s worst traffic cities waste over 40 hours a year in traffic as a cost of $121 billion to the economy, these technologies and services are just a few of many ways we’re working across the industry to reduce the individual, economic and environmental toll of traffic congestion.
