Qualcomm Technologies Accelerates LTE Multicast at the Indy 500

Qualcomm Technologies Inc. is collaborating closely with Verizon Wireless to demonstrate a new mobile broadcast experience at this year’s Indy 500. The upcoming demo, taking place Sunday, May 25, is the first such live in-venue trial of LTE Multicast in the U.S. on Verizon’s commercial 4G LTE network and is using mobile devices, and network infrastructure, that are ready to support commercial broadcast services. Qualcomm Technologies’ LTE Broadcast solution will be used together with a mobile app that is specifically developed for the Indy 500 to enable live camera feeds at various angles from different parts of the race track to deliver video to multiple users at the same time. 

Qualcomm Technologies’ comprehensive LTE Broadcast solution includes the chipset, optional broadcast middleware, multimedia services, and a proven interface for LTE Broadcast application development. Utilizing the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor and integrated Qualcomm® Gobi™ modem, Qualcomm Technologies supported the first-ever LTE Broadcast commercial launch on the KT network in Korea earlier this year. Qualcomm Technologies has been actively working with most major players in LTE Broadcast to further grow the ecosystem and validate the technology across several other use cases such as over-the-air file updates, real-time TV, and more.

This weekend’s demonstration at the Indy 500 racing event provides a tiny glimpse of how users can benefit from LTE Broadcast. I have a feeling that LTE Broadcast just shifted into a higher gear!
