Mobilize a Beautiful Earth

Happy Earth Day!

Did you know that today marks the 43rd anniversary of what many consider the founding of the modern environmental movement? On April 22, 1970, nearly 20 million Americans held coast-to-coast rallies in support of Mother Nature.

Today, Qualcomm employees around the world will join more than 1 billion people in acknowledging our beautiful planet and taking action to protect it. And later this week, Qualcomm will host an Earth Day Celebration at our San Diego headquarters featuring electric cars, locally sourced food, environmental organizations and live music.

But at Qualcomm we also realize that the care of planet Earth is a 365-day-per-year (well, 365.242 to be exact) job. That’s why we’ve strived to integrate sustainability throughout the company—in our products, in our operations and, most importantly, in our people.

Qualcomm solutions enable next-generation mobile technologies that are enhancing quality of life worldwide. They’re helping make transportation more efficient, make energy systems more reliable, increase the quality of health care, enhance education and better connect people everywhere.

Not only do we produce our products as efficiently and mindfully as we can, but we also work with our suppliers to extend environmental and social sustainability throughout our supply chain.

Our efforts don’t stop there. Through Qualcomm Wireless Reach, we’re using wireless technology to help bridge the digital divide, promote social inclusion and sustain the environment. Our Fishing with 3G Nets project in Santa Cruz Cabrália, Brazil is just one example of this—we provided 3G mobile devices and connectivity to fishermen, with special apps to provide weather, pricing, market information and other useful data. Fishermen are now able to communicate directly with hotels and restaurants, which reduces expenses and increases efficiency. We also worked to create more diverse economic activities, including oyster farming to cut down on overfishing in the area.  In only two months, a participating restaurant sold 2,000 oysters, which generated approximately US$1,286 in additional monthly income for the individuals who cultivated them.

In India, Qualcomm is working with Nexleaf on Project Surya, an initiative focused on mitigating climate change by replacing traditional cookstoves with clean cooking technologies. Clean cookstoves, while expensive to purchase, have numerous benefits that include reducing air pollutants and providing women with a healthier cooking environment. Nexleaf developed a mobile-based temperature sensor that measures cookstove usage and performance to help validate carbon credits that can be sold into carbon markets by the clean cookstove users. This pilot project intends to test this model, which will provide a financial incentive to poor rural citizens to replace their traditional stoves with the normally unaffordable clean cookstoves.

However, we’re aware that a sustainable mindset starts right here in San Diego. We’re excited about the progress the region has made – as a recent San Diego Foundation report notes, all 19 local governments have performed a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory; more than half have developed, or are working on, a climate action plan to reduce GHG emissions and deal with the risks climate change poses to our community.  We’re striving to do our part—we achieve an annual energy savings of 27.5 million kilowatt hours and save 16.9 million gallons of water every year in San Diego. We also offer our employees Green Restaurant Association Certified Green Restaurants™, farmer’s markets, EV charging stations and personal e-waste recycling opportunities.

Qualcomm is committed to being a positive and creative force in the protection and enhancement of the local and global environment—not just today or this week, but every day.

Join us today in helping mobilize a beautiful earth—as far as planets go, it’s pretty great.
