Celebrating International Data Privacy Day

Today is International Data Privacy Day!

Did you know that the modern data privacy movement began with the invention of the Instamatic camera and the concern over how pictures taken at social events should be shared? As privacy lore goes, The Right to Privacy, written by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis in 1890, was an indirect response to the publication of pictures from a birthday party in the society pages of the local newspaper.

According to the 2012 TIME mobility poll, the built-in camera on mobile devices is considered to be one of the technologies to have the greatest impact on the way people live their lives, behind text messaging and mobile Internet. Obviously, technology has evolved considerably since the cameras of the late 19th century. Yet information privacy concerns remain the same!

At Qualcomm, we are part of the born mobile generation. We envision a world where powerful, easy-to-use mobile devices are tailored to end-users’ individual needs and preferences. We believe that personalization of the mobile experience brings a wide array of benefits to both individuals and enterprises. Cultivating trust through a foundation of security and privacy practices helps drive broader adoption and more personalized wireless technology offerings.

We strive to foster trust in the use of mobile technologies by enabling responsible data privacy and data security practices that are informed by our privacy guiding principles:

  • Transparency in the collection, use and sharing of personal information
  • Providing or enabling meaningful choices over the collection, use and sharing of personal information
  • Providing or enabling value to consumers when using their personal information
  • Safeguarding personal information from existing and emerging threats
  • Responsible stewardship of personal information

In addition to developing our privacy principles we have expanded our internal privacy group, which is composed of Certified Information Privacy Professionals representing legal, government affairs and compliance teams, and advised by a cross-divisional steering committee.

Technology has come a long way since the days of the Instamatic camera, but respecting privacy and individuals’ choices is as important as ever. We believe in empowering users to make their own choice to share—or not share—birthday party pictures through the technology we develop.

Happy International Data Privacy Day!
