Highlighting Qualcomm’s Commitment to Social Responsibility

Did you know that in 2010 Qualcomm was once again named to FORTUNE magazine’s “Most Diverse Companies” list? Qualcomm employees represent more than 107 nationalities, speak 66 languages, range in age from 18 to 77, and are 55 percent minorities. This is just one of the numerous statistics and accomplishments we’re proud to highlight in the 2010 Qualcomm Social Responsibility Report (QSR).

This year’s report, “Sending a Strong Signal,” launched on the Qualcomm website this week and is formatted for convenient web and mobile viewing. It demonstrates Qualcomm’s commitment to social responsibility by showcasing our efforts in such key areas as governance, ethics, product responsibility, workplace safety, community involvement and environmental stewardship.

We’re also proud that the QSR Report voluntarily complies with the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) B+ Application Level this year. Several major accomplishments in our four key areas which are covered in the report, Our Company, Our Workplace, Our Community and Our Environment, include:

Our Company

• Qualcomm established a QSR organizational structure embedded within the greater corporate structure to focus on social responsibility issues. This includes the Leadership Committee, which reports to the Governance Committee and Board of Directors, as well as four QSR committees, Company, Workplace, Community, and Environment. These committees inform, assess and guide the Company’s efforts and ensure that social responsibility matters are an essential component of the company’s business strategy and daily operations.

• The Company’s Code of Business Conduct, The Qualcomm Way: Our Code of Business Conduct, is the result of a comprehensive 12-month evaluation and revision process. It strengthens policies on ethical operating behaviors and helps us navigate the ethical and legal landscape of our business.

Our Workplace

• Qualcomm was honored with the Higginbotham Corporate Leadership Award from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights under Law, which recognizes exemplary corporate leadership in advancing diversity and equal opportunity. Receiving this award led to implementation of the Parental Readiness and Empowerment Program (PREP) in collaboration with the Lawyers’ Committee to improve K-12 student achievement by increasing parental engagement with schools and teachers.

Our Community

• Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative is making strides to close the digital divide by bringing wireless technology to underserved communities around the world. Wireless Reach invests in projects that foster entrepreneurship, aid in public safety, enhance the delivery of health care, enrich teaching and learning and improve environmental sustainability. The group is involved in 64 projects in various stages of development in 27 countries. One of those projects, the 2010 Connected Computer Classroom Program, provided 33 schools and training centers in underserved provinces in China with wireless Internet access, benefitting more than 92,000 students and teachers.

Our Environment

• Qualcomm is committed to implementing the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) methodology in its facilities worldwide. In 2010, a facility in Bangalore and a facility in Beijing were designed for LEED certification.

• In 2010, the Company recycled more than 244 tons of electronic waste worldwide. Additionally, Qualcomm’s energy-efficiency efforts saved over 23.7 million kilowatt hours and approximately 7,805 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
