The Evolving Smartphone Segment – Post MWC Announcements

After returning from Barcelona, I have been able to give more thought to the different smartphones that were announced and exhibited at the show. And while the Nokia and Microsoft announcement on the Friday prior to the show seemed to steal some of the headlines, there was no shortage of new launches at the event.

As it turns out, I am in the market for a new smartphone, so my research should be able to help me in making my decision. On the lower end of the spectrum, pricing will continue to be a significant driver of segmentation. Yet at the mid- to high-tier, segmentation is getting more diverse and becoming comparable to the segmentation in other consumer electronics device categories, with options for any shopper.

To prove my point Here is a range of features and capabilities being offered in new smartphones being launched.

• Mobile OS: Android, WinPhone, WebOS, Blackberry OS, iOS
• Processing speed: 600 MHz, 800 MHz, 1-1.5 GHz, dual-core
• HD: 720P, 1080P, 3D record/playback, HDMI outputs
• Display: LCD, Pixel Qi, NOVA display, OLED, AMOLED, Super AMOLED, 3D
• Display size: ranging from 2.6 inches up to 4.3 inches with many variants in between
• Camera: many variants of resolution going up to 8 MP, front facing cameras for video conferencing
• Mobile broadband: HSPA, HSPA+, MC-HSPA+, EV–DO, LTE
• Other: HDMI output, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, NFC

As a consumer, it is always good to have a choice, so now it is time for me to consider my options and get a new phone.
