Multi-mode 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi Small Cell Solutions

  • The mobile industry is preparing for an increase in mobile data traffic, which Qualcomm calls the 1000x data challenge.
  • To address this increase in data traffic, operators around the globe are using small cell technologies as a cost-effective way to improve cellular network capacity and coverage.
  • Small cells play a pivotal role in bringing huge amount of data capacity, where it is needed the most, by brining network closer to users.
  • To reach 1000x capacity, we need much more of them, everywhere—indoors, at homes, offices, enterprises, shopping malls etc., and in outdoors, at busy intersections, stadiums etc.

Hetnet Optimization

  • Optimization of HetNets provides substantially higher overall network capacity than what can be achieved by merely adding small cells.
  • Enhancements such as “Range Expansion” are possible with today’s HSPA+ and soon to be commercial LTE Advanced networks.

NextGen Hetnets

  • Opportunistic small cells dynamically switch ON and OFF based on the data demand, which reduces interference and saves energy.
  • Extending carrier aggregation to combine traffic among small cells and across small and macro cells also reduces interference and save energy.
  • NextGen HetNets will bring robust interworking between 3G/4G and Wi-Fi, be it seamless mobility and roaming between the two networks, or better integration of the two in the infrastructure and devices, or using both the technologies to improve the user experience.

Neighborhood Small Cells

  • Qualcomm is proposing a new, and innovative deployment model called “Neighborhood Small Cells (NSC).”
  • NSC is a network of extremely low-cost, plug-and-play, open, indoor small cells that provides extremely high indoor capacity as well as good outdoor coverage and capacity in the immediate “neighborhood.”
  • Qualcomm’s UltraSON suite of interference and mobility management techniques makes such models a reality by solving interference challenges and by offering seamless mobility.
  • The NSC is extremely cost effective because consumers can deploy the small cells and provide the backhaul, saving operators time and money.
  • Initial studies show capacity increases of up to 500x with a mere 9% penetration of households, and up to 1000x with 20% penetration, while using 10x more spectrum.
  • Future enhancements are focused on enabling the same 1000x increase with even less spectrum or lower household penetration.

FSM99x Platform

  • As a family of 28 nanometer (nm) solutions, the Qualcomm FSM99xx enable pico, metro and enterprise small cells that are designed to enhance operators’ 3G and LTE networks.
  • Integrates the company’s 3G and 4G technologies and support advanced 802.11ac/n Wi-Fi to enable full-featured small cells that are designed to provide superior performance with greater power efficiency.
  • Designed to support concurrent 3G and 4G operation or dual carrier 4G with carrier aggregation, and also host advanced Wi-Fi capabilities to make the best use of all available spectrum and seamless connectivity for mobile users.
  • Designed for maximum power efficiency to reduce operating expenses and enable compliance with power-over-Ethernet requirements for enterprise deployments.
  • Utilizes Qualcomm Technologies’ industry-leading quad core Krait mobile processors, which are designed to consume half the power of other processors.
  • Expected to sample in the second half of 2013.
