Qualcomm Life – Mobilizing Health Care

June 20, 2013
  • Qualcomm Life provides end-to-end managed services to wirelessly connect medical devices or integrate mobile applications reliably and at scale.
  • Since medical device data is coming through our 2net™ Platform, we are in a unique position to explore how to store data to facilitate new opportunities in healthcare analytics, informatics and services for our ecosystem customers and technology partners within the bounds of applicable device regulations and privacy laws.
  • Qualcomm Life is a company that was founded, in part, to assist medical device manufacturers who approached Qualcomm for help when their own wireless connectivity and interoperability attempts became untenable.
  • Medical device manufacturers have learned the hard way on how many moving parts and hidden costs are involved with a broad wireless implementation.
  • We build our solutions with interoperability and scalability in mind. We created the 2net Hub as an affordable and expeditious solution to wirelessly connect medical devices to the 2net Platform. And because the 2net Hub is an FDA-listed medical device, our customers and technology partners are getting a wireless health solution that is scalable, reliable, interoperable and extensible at much lower cost and exponentially faster than if they did it on their own.
  • The 2net Platform facilitates an encryption process that leverages network operations and data centers, allowing medical devices to share data with healthcare providers, payers and patients through a data platform designed to meet HIPAA privacy and security guidelines.
  • The platform contains four different gateways that enable data to get from a medical device back to the data center. They include the 2net Hub (which is a standalone FDA-listed external device), medical devices with an embedded cellular component, medical data sent from mobile phones, and customer and collaborator service platforms using APIs.
  • Launched in 2011, the 2net Ecosystem is now comprised of more than 275 customers, partners and collaborators and includes a $100M investment fund called Qualcomm Life Fund that is focused on investing in the wireless health space.

Shift from care in high acuity settings (hospitals) to care at home

  • In May 2013, Qualcomm Life acquired HealthyCircles, an integrated, accessible and interoperable Software as a Service (SaaS) Care Orchestration Engine that seamlessly connects health care professionals, patients, families, caregivers and associated systems to monitor and manage patients’ care outside of an acute care setting.
  • This acquisition creates the industry’s first full spectrum, interoperable and customizable data management and care coordination service offering, providing scalable modules for health care organizations, providers and medical device manufacturers.
  • HealthyCircles enables rich data capture capability with the 2net device data, including medication history, labs, care team data entry and patient symptomatic self-assessment, thereby creating a robust dataset for care transitions, ACOs, complex care management, medication adherence and compliance, and even clinical trials.
  • Up to 90 percent of all health spending in North America and Europe is towards treating chronic conditions. Immediately, 25 percent would benefit from wireless home monitoring solution and another 50 percent from handset integration with existing devices.
  • Qualcomm operates the world’s largest enterprise data MVNO with over 12 million messages delivered each day across 40 countries and four continents and is leveraging this M2M platform in connecting wireless health devices.
  • Seamless connectivity enables real time feedback from devices and services and allows consumers and physicians to better engage and manage health and wellness.

Webinar: Connecting the Home across Networks and across Devices

SEP 25, 2013

Please join us for an update on Qualcomm’s role in the Connected Home with cutting-edge technologies such as Gobi™, Wi-Fi®, Hy-Fi™ (hybrid wired and wireless networking), Streamboost™, AllJoyn™ and HomePlug® Powerline. These technologies bring the necessary interoperability across networks and across devices, enabling our connected home ecosystem partners to create delightful user experiences.

Our homes, our cars, and the things around us are getting smarter every day. AllJoyn™ is the open source project that lets the compatible smart things around us recognize each other and share resources and information across brands, networks, and operating systems. AllJoyn gives manufacturers and developers the tools they need to invent new ways for smart things to work together.
