Why Gestures?

Gestures are a powerful means of communication among humans and are deeply rooted in our communication and the way we interact with the devices around us. For instance, people often continue gesturing when speaking on the telephone, which is a natural interaction between humans and computing devices. A great example of this is the stunning success of the Kinect gaming system where people interact with games through gestures.

Key messages:

  • Significant algorithmic advancements and decreasing hardware and processing costs are making gesture recognition more practical for widespread use.
  • Developers and users need to think beyond touchscreens and embrace the idea of hands-free use cases.
  • Qualcomm is also striving to make gesture algorithms faster, more robust, and more accurate, particularly with these key enablers:
    • Hand tracking (Camera-based)
    • Facial Recognition (Camera-based)
    • Full-Body Recognition (Camera-based)
    • Ultrasound Gesture Detection (Microphone-based)
