Employees in the Community
Qualcomm employees bring their innovation, dedication, and compassion to the service of our community. Whether feeding the homeless or helping out senior citizens, caring for abandoned animals or fundraising for foster kids, our employees are dedicated to making a measurable impact on the communities we call home. Here are some recent examples of Qualcomm employees' outstanding volunteer efforts:
Spotlight on Qualcomm Employee Volunteers
Tuning Kids Into Engineering (Farnborough)
Farnborough employees recently “got with” a group of 14 teenagers as part of the Get With program. Get With aims to give young people something to do during the school holidays. The teenagers visited the Farnborough office where employees worked with them on various projects, culminating in them building their own working FM radio to take home. Based on the success of the event, the office is now looking to replicate it on a smaller scale with local schools, as well as partake in other volunteering activities.
QSCO Qrewes Lend Helping Hands and Putt for Charity (San Diego)
Qualcomm Supply Chain Operations’ cross-functional teams (known internally as Qrewes) were busy this summer giving back to the community.
Qrewe 9 donated time, money and food to benefit the San Diego Food Bank earlier this summer. They delivered over 367 pounds of food items, equal to 400 meals.
QSCO Qrewe 8 held its first annual Charity Putt-Putt Golf Tournament in June. Employees designed and constructed an 18-hole miniature golf course in an empty suite in their building, then opened the course up to their entire building for a day of fun and giving. Part volunteer activity and part team-building event, the tournament was a great success and raised $1247 for the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation.
Raising Funds on the Run (Cambridge and London)
On July 6, Qualcomm’s Cambridge and London offices sent a team of 4 runners to The Asics British 10K London Run 2008 in aid of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). The Qualcomm employees joined 25,000 other runners who took to the historic streets of central London to raise money for their chosen charities.
Thanks to tremendous support through their fundraising website, a Qualcomm Matching Grant and a “gift aid” tax back on charitable gifts from the UK government, the team surpassed their donation target of £1,000 and raised £1550.90 ($2,412.94 USD).
Volunteering in Style (San Diego)
Qualcomm Enterprise Services’ Marketing Communications team decided to donate clothing from their photo shoots to several charities, ensuring that the clothes’ functionality would live on beyond their original purpose.
Dress for Success, a non-profit group who provides disadvantaged women with job interview-appropriate attire will receive approximately $500 worth of new and gently worn clothing. Goodwill will receive approximately $500 worth of men’s and casual clothing from the same shoot. Jill’s House, a non-profit group that provides respite for families with disabled children will receive marketing materials that were printed with the now outdated “Jill” logo, which was used for QES’ OmniVision launch.
A Beautiful Day of Giving (Korea)
In May, employees from Qualcomm Korea (QCK) and Qualcomm CDMA Technologies Korea (QCTK) donated 1,382 used items at Qualcomm’s Beautiful Day Corporate Giving event. The gifted items such as clothes, books and toys were given to the “Beautiful Store,” a non-profit organization which helps the poor through funds raised by the sale of donated products at their 80-plus stores throughout Korea. Qualcomm’s Beautiful Day event raised 1,277,500KRW ($1,277 USD).
QCTK also made a separate donation of eight laptops to be used in Beautiful Store offices throughout Korea.
In addition to dropping off their used items, 18 employees from the two offices donated their time helping with sales and placing the items on display. The two most active participants were honored by Sung Kim, Senior Vice President & President, Qualcomm Korea and Jim Doh Senior Vice President and General Manager, QCT Korea/Taiwan/Japan)as the event’s “Best Donators.” Joon Yang from QCK and KT Seong from QCTK both received a Best Donator Award Certificate as well as coffee imported by the Beautiful Coffee Organization which ensures fair prices for coffee producers in Nepal.
Writing a Recipe for Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House (San Diego)
Twelve members of QCT (Cores and Platforms) Tech Pubs spent a rewarding afternoon at a team building and volunteer event at Ronald McDonald House. The RMH is located next to Children’s Hospital in San Diego and provides temporary housing and refuge for families during traumatic times. After a tour of the facility, the team whipped up a delicious meal for the House’s inhabitants – families of children undergoing treatment for cancer, leukemia and other serious illnesses.
The group also presented a $350 gift, which will purchase a freezer to store breast milk for sick children. Other donations included food for the House’s pantry, toiletries and clothing.
Serving Seniors (San Diego)
Last month the Qualcomm Serving Seniors Group was awarded a 2008 Heroes Award by the Senior Community Center. The group has been serving lunchtime meals to the seniors, once a month, for more than eight years. They’ve also organized a multitude of donation drives for the transitional housing program and supportive housing complex as well as hosted holiday parties. In addition, Qualcomm has supported Senior Centers’ Health Preservation and Supportive Housing Programs.
Horton Hears a Q! (San Diego)
Qualcomm’s U.S. Patent Support Group took part in a Qualcomm Cares team building project in April. Forty eager volunteers arrived at Alonzo E. Horton Elementary School in San Diego’s Chollas View neighborhood. They brought books, toys, and wish list items for the school’s onsite day care center, and cleaning supplies, all donated by employees throughout Qualcomm. Most of the volunteers visited the school’s kindergarten and first grade classrooms to participate in a reading program with the students. A small team worked in the day care center, cleaning and renovating the room.
Sorting Food and Building Team Spirit (San Diego)
Seventeen members of the QCT SCM team volunteered their time at the San Diego Food Bank in April. The San Diego Food Bank is a critical component to the welfare of San Diego County, providing food to people in need, advocating for the hungry and educating the public about hunger-related issues. It acts as a central repository and distribution point for government and donated food. The team members participated in food sorting, which ensures that donated food is sorted, cleaned, packed and ready for member agencies.
