Why Qualcomm?
I overheard some engineering friends of mine talking about how great their company was and about CDMA technology. Because of my military background, I had always wanted to further my career in communication technology. They told me about their experience working at Qualcomm and how it was an innovative engineering environment.
Military Groundwork for Qualcomm Culture
As a Radioman, my specialties were Teletype repair and Special Communications. A Radioman Special Communicator must to be able to work well under pressure, when many times it could be a life or death situation. That ability to work well under pressure benefits me while working here at Qualcomm. The skills that I learned in the military -- and the discipline I’ve received -- enables me to work well in Qualcomm’s fast-paced, yet innovative environment.
Tips on Transitioning from the Military to Qualcomm
When I got out of the Navy in the early nineties, I continued studying engineering at a local technical college which enhanced what I learned in the military about communications. My ability to learn more theory of the science of telecommunications made me an even stronger asset to our Qualcomm team. Learning the theory and principles behind the technology now enables me to design some of the technology that I have used and performed troubleshooting for so many years.
Favorite Qualcomm Benefits
Because I have a family -- a wife and four children -- I feel that one of the greatest benefits is the medical and dental. I have worked at several companies, both military-related companies as well as private sector companies, and Qualcomm has one of the best health care packages.
Rewarding Work
While the medical benefits are really rewarding, so is the environment and the people. Working in the Qualcomm environment is unique in that we have the financial latitude to innovate. In this environment we don’t only work on the cutting edge of communication science, we have and will continue to create cutting edge communication technologies. The people at Qualcomm are creative and intelligent. Qualcomm prides itself on recruiting top talent. This makes my job easier. When people can work together, with varying strengths in different areas, then there is no limit to what can be accomplished.
