Qualcomm, a leading global developer of next-generation wireless technology, has created a place where big dreams are backed by investment and a commitment to innovation. Qualcomm Bay Area Corporate Research and Development (BARD) group is based in Santa Clara, California and takes Qualcomm's traditional strength in wireless technologies in new directions. The goals of BARD are to interact with local universities in the bay area, with partner companies, and startups, and to pursue new areas of research BARD is particularly interested in location based services, mobile internet optimization technologies, software platforms for smartphones, multicore hardware and software technologies, cloud computing, virtual worlds and augmented reality.

New Research Directions

BARD is developing technologies in areas of significant long-term importance to Qualcomm. We describe a few current select areas of interest.

New Hardware and Software Platforms for Mobile Devices

Smartphone hardware processors are becoming increasingly more sophisticated. We are developing new software platforms that exploit power of these new processors, Our new platform research focuses on, programming language runtimes, new web browser architectures, and virtual machine technologies.

Indoor Positioning

We are developing indoor positioning and indoor positioning based service enablers that have low cost of deployment, and are efficient.

University Relations

BARD collaborates with local universities in a variety of areas. We recently initiated a Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship, which is a new fellowship paradigm that encourages teams of students to compete for a fellowship. With this fellowship we are sponsoring topics that expand Qualcomm’s reach into new areas and that complement the ongoing work at BARD. Each winning project team is assigned a mentor from BARD. The mentor’s role is to foster stronger ties between BARD, the students and faculty on an ongoing basis, through frequent visits to university campus. The students and faculty are also encouraged to visit BARD.
