Mobile Data Traffic Management
Reducing power consumption and helping operators maximize data capacity.
The ever-increasing growth of data and signaling traffic generated by smart phones is challenging current networks. User experience is also being afftected by poor battery performance in smart phones. There is a real need for intelligent system selection and effective use of offload between 3G/LTE and Wi-Fi. Mobile applications need to be efficiently managed to improve battery life and reduce signaling traffic.
Qualcomm has developed a solution called Connectivity Engine (CnE) to address these challenges. CnE is a suite of low-level algorithms that enable intelligent management of device connectivity. CnE is designed to help operators better utilize their existing network capacity and improve the user experience by making smart phones and mobile devices more power efficient, intelligent and network friendly. The two main components of CnE are Network Socket Request Manager (NSRM) for efficient data application management and Wi-Fi Quality Estimation (WQE) for intelligent Wi-Fi offload.
CnE is being commercialized as value added software available on select Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets.

Details
NSRM uses intelligent aggregation of application data requests during background mode to improve battery life and reduce signaling traffic. WQE dynamically estimates the link/path characteristics of Wi-Fi networks. Using WQE in conjunction with operator policies and user preferences, CnE makes intelligent system selection decisions between 3G/LTE and Wi-Fi. This results in a better Wi-Fi user experience and better utilization of the operator assets.
