Femtocells

The Qualcomm R&D program is driving the advancements in femtocells in providing high quality coverage and services. Years of research, prototyping and validation effort has led to the development of UltraSON™, a comprehensive suite of self organizing network features for interference and mobility management of co-channel deployment of femtocells in residential and enterprise environments. UltraSON™ is now commercially available as part of Qualcomm FSM chipsets.

Another area of focus is targeted towards maximizing the value of femtocells for open access public neighborhood outdoor areas. The Femtocell R&D team has recently introduced a novel concept called ‘Neighborhood Femto’ where open-access femtocells are deployed indoors but provide extended coverage outside, resulting in tremendous capacity benefits.
