For instance, wireless access is helping protect and enhance the environment, by developing smarter, more energy-efficient programs. It is also working to improve access to instant communication and information, so that if a disaster strikes, communities are better prepared.

Fishing with 3G Nets is a system developed by Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach and project partners that integrates mobile and web-based applications and handheld devices to support sustainable fishing practices, business operations and deliver real-time market information to participating community members in Santa Cruz Cabrália, Bahia, Brazil.

Seguridad Inalambrica uses Qualcomm’s 3G technology to enable law enforcement and municipal government personnel to increase public safety through the mapping and sharing of information on crimes as they occur.

Fishermen are learning how to use wireless technology to learn 21st century skills and apply them to their trade through a mobile application called Fisher Friend, a Wireless Reach project since 2007.
