For many people around the world, a mobile device will be the first and only Internet experience they’ll ever have. Qualcomm Wireless Reach™ is exploring these and the other seemingly endless amount of ways 3G and next generation mobile technologies can improve people’s lives.

Wireless Reach is a strategic program that brings wireless technology to underserved communities globally. By working with more than 375 partners, we invest in projects that foster entrepreneurship, aid in public safety, enhance the delivery of health care, enrich teaching and learning and improve environmental sustainability. To date, Wireless Reach has 84 projects in various stages of development in 33 countries.Wireless Reach projects demonstrate the positive social and economic impact of wireless technologies in the communities in which we live and work.

Helping bridge the digital divide and promote social inclusion, our projects support a multitude of groups, such as students, low-income families, women, the elderly, residents of rural areas and disabled people as you’ll see below and throughout the rest of our site.

Education

Improving Education With 3G

In the Speak Up 2011 U.S. National Findings Report published by Project Tomorrow, an education research organization, 74 percent of education leaders say mobile devices have the potential to increase student engagement. Wireless Reach developed its Education Initiative to study the impact of mobile learning worldwide and funds pilot programs that support the extension of education beyond the physical confines of the classroom, thus allowing students to access digital content, communicate with teachers and collaborate with each other anywhere and anytime. Mobile devices with 3G/4G broadband connectivity help ensure all students have the tools and inspiration needed to excel. For those living at the base of the pyramid with no access to formal education, low-cost mobile phones have the power to bring helpful content to children and adults, providing informal learning opportunities to those most in need.

Entrepreneurship

Opening New Entrepreneurial Opportunities With 3G

Today, the number of mobile connections is greater than that of fixed broadband and is growing quickly; making wireless devices more affordable and more accessible than ever. Low-cost devices have the capability to provide the most up-to-date information from a massive digital library and can enable individuals from rural areas with no landline connectivity to communicate with others around the world. By providing entrepreneurs with wireless access and raising the profile of entrepreneurship among policymakers and other influencers, Wireless Reach is helping to stimulate the economic ecosystem. According to the World Bank, a ten percentage point increase in mobile penetration increases per capita GDP by .8 percent in developing countries. Furthermore, a ten percentage point increase in Internet penetration increases per capita GDP by 1.4 percent in developing countries.

Health Care

Improving Universal Health With 3G
Qualcomm is working with industry visionaries to help accelerate the convergence of mobile technology, medicine and personal health. Recent estimates suggest mobile health monitoring of chronic disease patients can save nearly US$200 billion in annual health care costs in Brazil, Russia, India and China, as noted in eweek.com. Efforts to integrate 3G and other wireless technology into diagnostic, monitoring, therapy management and other health devices will ease the strain on health care providers, lower costs and improve care and consumer convenience. In developing countries, wireless connectivity has proven to be effective in overcoming obstacles such as delivering quality health care to people living in remote areas. Technology brings skilled medical experts instantly to patients in need using wireless connectivity and video conferencing. Also, smaller clinics can connect to main hospitals ensuring remote health care workers have the latest information and access to specialists.

Public Safety / Environment

Improving Public Safety and Protecting the Environment with 3G

Wireless Reach is continuously exploring new avenues that showcase the benefits of wireless connectivity. By working with partners, Wireless Reach is helping to improve access to real-time information, so communities can be better prepared for inclement weather and other natural disasters. Wireless Reach is also helping to develop smarter, more efficient programs that spur innovation, enhance productivity, drive economic growth and help sustain the environment. Facilitated by the use of applications and services supported by 3G technology, solutions have been created for the sustainable development of local fishing communities and to assess the impact of clean cooking technology.
