At Qualcomm, we set high environmental expectations for our products, and suppliers that manufacture our products. As a fabless manufacturer of integrated circuit (IC) products, our close working relationships with suppliers is essential in our effort to integrate environmental considerations into products and services. Through working closely with manufacturing suppliers in various stages of design, we strive to ensure compliance with applicable global environmental legislation and various industry initiatives, including Qualcomm's own environmental initiatives. Qualcomm restricts the use of and supports the removal of lead and other potentially hazardous substances, including bromine and chlorine, from our products. Our manufacturing suppliers are required to operate their manufacturing operations in accordance with their local, regional, and national environmental laws and regulations. These suppliers are multi-national companies that have a strong commitment to environmental conservation and comprehensive environmental management programs.
Qualcomm is aware of concerns that minerals mined in conflict areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and adjoining countries may be making their way into the electronics industry supply chain, and may be fueling human rights violations and environmental degradation.
Qualcomm is committed to ensuring our supply chain is free of DRC conflict minerals by supporting industry-wide efforts to implement due diligence in standards, systems and procedures. In addition to requiring that our suppliers comply with applicable laws, we expect that they source materials from environmentally and socially responsible suppliers, and not from conflict areas in the DRC and adjoining countries. More details on our conflict-free minerals policy are available in our 2011 Social Responsibility Report.
Our responsible product design extends to building socially responsible products. As an applicant member of Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC), Qualcomm is committed to adopting and implementing the EICC Electronic Industry Code of Conduct (the Code). We’re also committed to helping our key electronics manufacturing suppliers to adopt the same code of conduct for their operations. More information on Qualcomm's supply chain management is available in our 2011 Social Responsibility report.
