CEO Message

A Message from Our Chairman and CEO

Thinking ahead—imagining the future and then innovating to make it real—is the essence of our business. It’s how we stay at the forefront of the mobile technology industry and how we’re linking people everywhere more closely to information, entertainment and each other.

Dr. Paul E. Jacobs

“Thinking ahead” sums up our social responsibility efforts as well. Year after year, we’ve built a values-based culture that prompts us, as a Company and as individuals, to consider cause and effect—the consequences of our actions. We know that fulfilling Qualcomm’s vision has everything to do with our intentions and actions today. Choosing responsibility makes our Company stronger and our success sustainable.

In 2011, as our Company continued its rapid growth and posted record earnings, our employees around the world made strides in our ongoing efforts to do business with foresight, integrity and heart. One clear example was our employees’ response to the tragic earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that struck Japan’s eastern coast on March 11. As a business, we were prepared to respond immediately: we helped ensure the safety of our employees in Japan and the continuing operation of our supply chain. As members of our global community, we joined the world’s outpouring of care by donating $1 million to help the people of Japan recover. Our employees reached out individually as well, demonstrating the true character of Qualcomm.

Another important achievement in 2011 was formalizing our commitment to social responsibility. By doing this, our Qualcomm Social Responsibility (QSR) Leadership Committee established a set of strategic priorities and took another important step toward integrating social responsibility in every part of our Company.

Of course, social responsibility has always been built into our products. We continue to engineer them to be as sustainable as possible. Moreover, our products are enabling improvements in energy distribution, health care, agriculture and transportation, among other areas. Every day, they help users increase efficiency, conserve resources and reduce pollution.

In fiscal 2011, we also:

  • Launched ethics training at our operations around the world to help employees further integrate The Qualcomm Way: Our Code of Business Conduct into their everyday actions
  • Continued finding ways to use energy and water as efficiently as possible as we grow our operations
  • Scored 100 percent on Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index
  • Established the Qualcomm Foundation, further formalizing our longstanding tradition of supporting and improving the communities where we live and work

For Qualcomm, as for every company, responsibility is a journey—a process of incremental progress and continual improvement. As pleased as we are with our accomplishments, we’re even more excited about where we’re going. The here and now is important, of course. But at Qualcomm, what is has never been quite as interesting to us as what if.
